My iPhone 13 Pro Max connects to WiFi only when I use open a website

Is there a way to keep the wifi persistent whether phone is screen locked?

Case:

1) I left the iPhone/iPad unused for a few hours
2) I pick it up and FaceID unlock
3) WiFi icon is not showing
4) I try to send iMessage or FaceTime Audio call... no Internet connection
5) Open Safari and refresh/reload website and then it connects to WiFi

What I want to occur is that whether it is left idle or not it is persistently connected to WiFi

Do you have an active cellular data plan?

might need to reset network settings

While locked the phone will periodically disconnect from wifi and switch to cellular network to save battery. You cannot change this.
