Don't upgrade to anything higher than 2.2.1.

I'm still on 2.2.1 and it runs great. It's so perfectly smooth and quick, it's almost like having an iPhone 4 (without multitasking and copy and paste of course).

Anyway... I'm happy for now.

My iPhone 3G is starting to show it's age on the outside though... I've got a ton of cracks, scratches and general wear 'n' tear on the outside of it.

Still makes and receives phone calls perfectly though.

Just thought I'd let you know. If you think 3.1.3 is fast, you should downgrade to 2.2.1. It's night and day. Believe me.

How do you downgrade?

It's complicated. You have to jailbreak your iPhone using Pwnage Tool using the 2.2.1 software. Then you have to restore again unjailbroken, but you'll get an error and be stuck on the connect to iTunes screen. Then you need to run software called iRecovery to kick it out of restore mode and let it boot into the actual 2.2.1 OS. After that, it will always work until you restore again.

And presumably search for older apps too, as a lot of newer apps won't run?
Not a put down BTW, I'm interested. I have an iPad now so just want a nice, responsive 3G. Not interested in bells and whistles, but there's the odd app I couldn't do without.

Your on the old iOS, but you can't run anything built for the newer versions. :p

most apps require 3.0 or higher, so its pretty useless

Oh, I don't run any third party apps. I have the facebook mobile website as a bookmark only.

I guess it's not for everyone then.

Also, I don't have a data plan. I'm currently using a go-phone sim in my iPhone, so I don't really care about apps anymore. It's just a phone to me now.

Still, the best phone to text with, so that's why I haven't gotten rid of it.

I'm convinced that OP is the one and only TheSpaz.

What with the 2.2.1 talk and the "still the best phone to text with" (TheSpaz would always say that), I'm almost certain this is TheSpaz.

true. He also used to go on and on and on about whether or not to cancel his data plan and use his iPhone on a prepaid sim.

I remember that guy lol

If you've got no 3rd party apps and just text and access facebook on a web app, you wouldn't have much issues by updating to iOS3 or even 4.

You have to copy paste sometime.

Yeah, but even with everything off, my phone is still slower on those OS's. I'm thinking about trying the iPhone 4 again. I had one for a few weeks but the antenna problem was bothering me too much so I returned it.

Who's thespaz? I'm kinda new here.

He started a few good posts here and there, but they always ended with everybody blasting him for being obsessive.

pointless activity, just upgrade the phone. what a frigging headache instead of two hundred dollar purchase. I don't get it.

i know money is tight everywhere, but this business of criticizing Apple over 3G support / trying to keep a 3 year old smartphone relevant is just dumb.

If you need an iPhone that works better than a 3G running 4.0, the price is $199, US.

Should be banned on suspicion of being TheSpaz just to be safe.

He did mention having a girlfriend...
