    Hi,

the format setting in camera is high efficient but the file size compared to the setting maximum compatibility isn't smaller!

Is there something I do wrong here?

    I believe you'll need 8, 8+ or X for that. It's a hardware encode.

If they did it through software it would kill your battery.

No, you don’t need an 8 or X. Your 7 has the hardware support for it. I’m assuming you are using the stock camera app? What source are you using to determine that it’s not a smaller file size?

I checked with metapho and it shows my that the files are jpg! Now I tried viewexif this app now shows its heif!! Maybe metapho doesn't support the new formats and always show jpeg!?

But anyway I don't see that the files with heif are a lot smaller then jpeg, I'll upload to examples

There’s a good chance that app will need to be updated in order to read the format info. Also, you are aware that the new format only applies to new photos that you take? It doesn’t convert existing photos.

Very odd. Your file sizes even for jpeg are larger than they should be. Here’s what I’m seeing.

Is the only way to get a heif out of that iPhone to use Image Capture? I could only get JPG if I emailed, Airdropped, sent to Dropbox or Files.app. I had assumed the "Keep Originals" would override the usual JPG-out behavior of Photos.
