I've just purchased an iPhone from a (dodgy) friend. My only saving grace is that it was really cheap!

The phone works fine but it will not recognise any SIM cards.

I have unlocked it correctly & I have jailbroke it too. The phone can pick up a WiFi signal, but as I said before I can not use it as a phone!

I'm beginning to think that it is a stolen phone. Is there any way I can get the phone working or are iPhones useless as phones if they have been reported as stolen?

If you even suspect it is stolen and it turns out to be then you could easily be charged with handling stolen goods (in the UK at least) and end up in prison. Why not check if the IMEI has be registered as stolen? If it has then the only honourable thing to do is to take it to the police and shop your pikey mate.

how do I find out where the IMEI is on a 3g. Then where do I look to see if it's registered as stolen?

A lorry is a truck. Fell off a lorry means pretty much the same thing as the similar euphemism. :p

Your country's iPhone service provider should be able to check the IMEI for you. I would do that and then follow Robbie's advice (most of the words in which I don't understand, but I think I catch the meaning  ).

EDIT: The IMEI on the 3G is in the SIM tray....

Assuming it will turn on/unlock then start the Settings app, tap General and then About. It's down near the bottom. I believe you can check here, but it's not free. I'm not aware of any free-access method. You could try calling your network as I think the networks have free access to the IMEI stolen database.

    Thanks guys!

Does anyone know whether I can get this phone up and running or is it now totally un-useable?

If the IMEI is blocked you cannot get it running as a phone and morally and legally you must turn it in to the Police as it is stolen

    how to ck iPhone IMEI

Another way to ck your iphone's IMEI is to open the phone app,
then go to the dialer and dial *#06#
This will display the IMEI #

If it is possible, you return the iphone to the (Doggy) friend.

But if it is not possible, then it's your luck, ;-)
