My iphone only connects to lte or 3G not 4g

I notice my friend has the same phone same location his iphone 5 says 4g my says 3G had iPhone since launch never saw it connect to 4g all I see is lte or 3G is there something wrong
 
Oh okay he has at@t and I have Verizon we were next to each other mine said 3G his says 4g why does at@t says 4g and mine 3G is it the same thing as 3G cause all I notice I either get 3G or lte no 4g
 
HSPA+ - Basically it's faster 3G, on the iPhone 5 it'll say 4G when he's in the area.
LTE - is 4G for Verizon.
 
hspa+ is att's way of making up for a less mature lte coverage. Kinda pointless now that I think about it when average LTE speeds are around the fastest HSPA+ speeds.Makes using the lte switch kind of redundant. I wish Verizon had something like that because honestly their 3G is terrible.
 
You're using different carriers that's why.
Its not the same network so you might get different indicators at different places and higher or lower signal bars at the same place.
Now if you used the same network then it would be an issue.
Now it is now.

Don't know where you live but my LTE speeds are 3-5 times faster than HSPA+

4G = LTE for GSM

3G = HSPA for GSM or ED-VO for CDMA. HSPA+ is sometimes called 3.5G

Earth is mostly GSM, so that standard won. Everyone is now moving to LTE. The congestion point is usually in the core network, so HSPA+ vs LTE may be no different to many subscribers. Many providers late to roll out LTE, starting calling HSPA+ 4G for marketing purposes. Just like at your house, it may be difficult to see that wired Gigabit Ethernet is much faster than 802.11n wireless since the choke point is your ISP link.
 
Ya my Verizon iPhone 5 says 3G or lte but at@t says 4g my friend has an AT&T iPhone 5 we are in the same location and his days 4g
 
3G = EVDO, up to 3.1 Mb/s, Verizon only
4G = HSPA+, up to 21 Mb/s, AT&T only
LTE = LTE, not sure of speed limit, both

I'm not sure you guys even answered his question yet, he is standing next to his friend but his friend has 4G and he only has 3G.

Someone please answer his question!
