picked up 2017 512gb at Best Buy. Time machine then High Sierra then to work. Left speaker blown. Grrr.Apple support appointment Friday. Thinking of just returning it.

Not this time, told they want to send it out for repair.

Just return it and get another unit. They are nice systems - sounds like you got one that didn't get quite enough QC love from the factory. Chances are your next one will be as close to flawless as a mass-manufactured device can be.

I know I have that option, I’m under several project deadlines. I made a local genius desk appointment and will roll the dice with Apple CS. If Apple can’t swap it out then I will return it to Best Buy. I wonder if I should turn off file vault in case Apple will exchange it and do an in store migration.

Apple isn't going to swap it especially since you purchased from Best Buy. They'll only do repairs at this point. I think they have to repair at least 4 times before they swap for a new laptop. Just take it back to Best Buy. If you're a member your return period is 30 days.
