My .mac address is screwing up iCloud email

I used a really old Apple ID for my icloud account. I was able to login into icloud on the phone and have all the mail account setup. But the phone automatically recognized my account as .mac even though I manually input the .me email address in the setup. At first I didn't care because it didn't affect much but until I started trying to send email, it says server rejected my .mac source address.

What should I do?

I have the same problem. If I log in using a .me Apple ID, it sets up the email as .me instead of .mac and seems to work.

So for me, it is only choking on the .mac address. It's a shame cause I'd really like to use .mac instead of .me but somehow it doesn't seem like it works.

In summary:

Log in using username@mac.com
iPhone sets:
Apple ID to username@mac.com
Email to username@mac.com
Email does not work

Log in using username@me.com
iPhone sets:
Apple ID to username@mac.com
Email to username@me.com
Email does work

If I go to manage my Apple ID at appleid.apple.com it says both .mac and .me emails are verified, so I'm not sure why .mac is choking. But I guess the good news is that it seems to work with .me.

Check out this support document

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4436

under the How do I sign up for iCloud? ->I have an expired MobileMe or .Mac account. How do I sign up for iCloud?

"To use your expired account for iCloud, follow the iCloud setup instructions and enter your expired MobileMe or .Mac email address as your Apple ID. If you have an @me.com address, it will be reactivated for email when you sign up for iCloud. @mac.com addresses will not be reactivated for email, but you can set up a new @me.com email address."

The option to send as @mac.com is present in the webmail client and you should be able to send from that address. However you won't be able to receive mail with @mac.com.

I thought I went through all the support articles, but did not seem to find that one. That is exactly what is going on. Glad it's not a bug. Thanks for pointing that out.

so I don't get it. It's not a bug that the ID shows as .mac while the email uses .me?

Apparently not. Your Apple ID is left over as being a .mac account. I guess an Apple ID doesn't even have to be a valid email address. But that KB specifically says your .mac email won't work. Doesn't get much more plain that that.

The real bug is that if you transfer an expired @mac.com and @me.com address into iCloud then you can still send mail from the @mac.com address from the webmail application. This is not good because people cannot easily respond to your sent mail from @mac.com because their message to your @mac.com address will bounce.

The iCloud webmail? I think mine was automatically configured as a .me account. My iPhone said .mac was my email whenever I signed in as .mac though.

My iPhone setup the same way in iOS 5. But when I compose a message in the iCloud webmail I have the option of selecting my old mac.com address.

Same issue - no luck

I too have the same issue. My expired .mac address is my iTunes logon name. When I set up iCloud it requested that I establish a new .me email address which I did. I can log on to iCloud with either the .mac or .me address (same password) but I cannot access iCloud mail using either logon. The rest of iCloud seems to work fine.

Needless to say it's very frustrating and after many hours of tweaking it still doesn't work. May have to go to the Genius Bar this weekend unless others have a suggestion on how to fix this.

Thanks - Andrew
