The thread is funny but I actually do see a use for stolen/purchased receipts.

Suppose I have a Best Buy (or Walmart, Costco, or whatever) receipt for a computer that's stored on open shelves. I pick one up and walk out the door. When I'm asked to show a receipt, I have one.

These would seem to be a shoplifter's delight.

That's not going to work unless the date and time printed on the receipt are current. I can't see a policeman or security guard buying that story if the receipt is three months old, except maybe if you're taking it in to be repaired (in which case it won't be a sealed unit). If shops are replacing a defective unit, they often give a new receipt with a new current date and time.

That's a good point. But in order for that to work, you'd have to rely on the receipt checker not noticing that the time and possibly the date were wrong, depending on the source of the receipt. If the shoplifter is in cahoots with a cashier, they'd have to wait for someone to buy an item desired by both. The the cashier would do the swiping of the receipt and the palm it off to the doer. It could be hours before something good came through that register.

The doer would then need to go retrieve the item bring it to the front, and get passed the receipt checker. Of course in the US showing a receipt in a non-club store is not mandatory unless the store has cause to believe something has been stolen. Loss prevention might spot you pick up a big ticket item and head to the door and I think that would be cause for them to call the cops.

So, unless you were getting a stream of these receipts from different stores, like I used to do for my expense reports, I think you could really only use an individual store once and then the cashier accomplish would need to keep getting new jobs.

As the op I'll state a few things, 1. This thread got quite a bit of attention for what reason I don't know, I had a receipt missing and I suspected someone being dodgy after piecing together the events I then resolved this yet some doubt me. 2. I couldn't care less if you believe me or not, I'm 22 I work in film production for a small company and have a gf and kid, I have better things to do than to make up ****, as a person who use to be actively aware of crime for reasons I can't say, I get an inlking when something is up,on this occassion I was right and even more so got a result out of it, all the jokes are fine but some people just get a little too serious, like this was the bible and u followed it religously only to find out heaven was a beach shack, what did u want me to say I went in with c4 strapped to my balls and scream at the assistant declaring kamikazee unless she gives me my damn effin reciept?

Holy commas batman

Generally, that's not how the scam works. Usually the person brings the receipt in and then picks up an item on display and returns it for cash. This does not really work at the big box stores. Usually it was done at department stores like Macy*s and such; it was rampant in "The Cellar", where people would buy one stand mixer for $250 and "return" it a couple of days later. When there are registers interspersed throughout the store, it is feasible. With a big box store, nearly impossible.

With a catalogue store? Impossible.
