It's called physics and interference from other metallic objects.
So why doesn't my PC that sits in the same room and uses a Bluetooth mouse not suffer the same issues?

Because your PC isn't made of aluminum.
The iMac itself is already aluminum. Adding another metallic item near it will only add to even more interference.
BTW - It's ALUMINIUM![]()
Well that makes the situation even more ludicrous.
Does that mean that every Mac owner is suffering the same issue or are they having to sit within sterile environments for the sake of getting their mouse to work!!

I wonder whether I'm the only non-Oz MR member who gets your Bazza reference -- assuming that's what it is.
But seriously. My Magic Mouse (and retina iMac) get unhappy with one another every couple of weeks. It's always the batteries (rechargeable, mostly) -- even though the batteries seem to have a decent charge.
New or recharged batteries and Bob's your uncle.
There used to be a place in System Prefs that let you declare that your mouse was a "favorite" (I think it was) but I can't find it in Yosemite. Maybe it's gone.
So bloody what? It doesn't matter what the spelling is.
This is a predominantly American forum by the way.
Here's an update following my visit to the Apple store today which I found quite interesting.
I explained the problem I was experiencing and the work through's that Apple Chat conducted.
First thing the Apple assistant asked is if I was using Duracell batteries which I was and always do.
That's most likely the problem I was told. For some reason the Duracells cause issues. Searches on other forums suggest they are slightly smaller.
Now switched to Energisers and will monitor going forward.
Please let me know how it goes, the amount of issues I suffer with bluetooth on a 2013 iMac are ridiculous for a computer that cost this amount of money...
My Magic Trackpad lags like crazy from time to time, my keyboard will randomly disconnect and connect back, and the magic mouse also lags and disconnects.
Just great... specially for a >2k EUR computer...
These issues never happened to me before Yosemite and a reboot will fix it for another 10/20 minutes.
Oh, and to add to that, If I switch to Windows (in bootcamp) it never has issues so this must be a driver issue![]()
So far no problems but sometimes the mouse would work fine for a long time and then disconnect so I wait to see.
Your problems sound as though it could be something completely difference as my trackpad works fine and does not cut out.
Have you checked whether some of your programs are consuming lots of memory when the lagging starts? Seems strange that a reboot fixes the problem for a little while so maybe you have a corrupt program or faulty memory - possible?
