This didn't work for me (had mobo replaced due to whine), and as a matter of fact, it made it worse. The temp actually avged up 3-5*C. My max fan speed was 15872 i think. Now I have it changed it back, it's better. Anyone else w/ better results?

Um well I tried it on a 17", should be around the same. It worked, then it caused AppleFan to stop working :(

is your computer overheating? when you say applefan you mean the file not your fan right? anyway an archive install of osx should fix it.

I have taken the smc program and have made it extremly easy to use. You just put the smc-0.01 in your applications folder and run the applescripts i made for it in that folder. I have no clue if this works on older, pre-intel, machines. also i have only tested this on a MBP. Should work on a mb too. I can write more scripts for more computers if someone with those computers would be willing to contact me. Mac Pro, Mac mini, iMac intel + g serries, powerbook, and ibook. http://www.filefactory.com/file/3cc9d6/

edit: I also recomend getting coreduotemp if you have a mbp or mb to watch the temps.

The AppleScripts don't do anything for me. Tried running the 4000RPM one, Terminal opened but quit immediately. Checked the info.plists for AppleFan and AppleBlower, nothing modified. Should I get a feedback from the scripts if it succeeded?

EDIT: I was wrong, the scripts worked brilliant! I used to idle around 60-65°C, now I'm getting mid 40's at idle!
EDIT2: Max load (using the yes command) used to be 85-88, now stable at around 75, quite a good drop!

Question: I chose 4000RPM, in what ways could that hurt the computer compared to the default rpm?

Btw, MBP 2.0Ghz

For those of you who got a lower temp using this method, do u have the old or new logic boards? That would help.

If I am reading the "README's" correctly it looks like this is a temporary fix and will default to the original settings if you reboot. Is this correct or does this make it permenent? And if it is permanent then I assume you should have copies of the 2 particular plists that this affects.

Thanks!!

the apple scripts don't change the appleblower or applefan. it actually changes some values in the hardware. Im not sure if it keeps the values after shutdown or sleep. Just run the file after startup and waking up to be sure.

4000rpm is fine. I like 3500rpm better. 4000 just cools it down faster, after a certian point it just doesn't get much cooler and isn't worth it. 4000 is safe in my opion and so i didn't put it in the unrecomended folder.

Mine was produced week 22, so it's not the oldest logic cards, but not the newest either...

Seems to work. What does it do exactly? Does it make the fan run at 3500rpm all the time? Is it OK to run it all the time?

you got it. I think its safe to run them the fans at 3500 rpm all the time, after i while i will lower it to 3000 rpm cause it quiter and does just as well when the comp is cooled down. Whenever i leave it on my desk overnite or durring the day i rewrite to the default and let the comp manage it.

i beileve the default speeds are between 800-1200 rpm, but when you rewrite to the default value you don't write a speed, you just renable the automatic controler which gets its speeds from the appleblower file and the applefan file., or if you changed it with my old instructions, to that.

Wow, I can't believe how effective this was! I just ran the 4000 RPM script and my temp went from around 68ºC down to 49ºC!! That is insane!! Excellent work, Rokem! :D

Also, thanks for providing the Default value just in case.

-Matt

EDIT: Still going. Right now at 45ºC! Going to run the 3500 script now, though.

I've got to ask:

What are you fine folks using to monitor temps? A specific app, or something on the menu bar, or this software itself?

Thanks...

Cool! Thanks!

I'll try it for a few days :) Did you manage to find out if the settings are reset to default after sleep mode?

EDIT: Looks like you need to run the script after the sleep mode. But still great. My temps weren't that high anyway, but now I am running at 35C.

Rokem; Just a great job!! It is temporary by the way as far as my 15.5 MBP. When I reboot the temp jumps up to around 150F depending upon what I am doing. When I play "HALO" it jups to 168F and I noticed it starting to jump Frame Wise on the video. This is the Universal Version. Anyways appling either the 3000 or 3500 jumps it down pretty quick to a real low level and smoothes thing out a lot!! I am using "iStat Pro" which is a widget that monitors a lot of activity on the MBP except for the fans which it does not see for some reason. Here is the link for "iStat" if anybody wants to try it; http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html . I like it a lot better than CoreDueTemp....

any way to get this working on an ibook. I keep getting an error that says cant execute binary file.

is it possible to make the 3500rpm configuration the default for the mbp?

every time i restart the mbp i have to execute the script, and i want it to be automatic

Put it in the login items, all you have to do is enter password and press ok :)

Are you saying that the perfromance improved also?

OK, I have tried the steps listed above, but some of them are contradictory and my MBP doesn't seem to be running any cooler (according to CoreDuoTemp). Could Rokem (or someone) please post the most up-to-date steps, and remove all other steps which DON'T work?

EDIT: OK, never mind. I found the SMC app, which works (unlike the Applefan and Appleblower instructions, which did not). Thanks Rokem! (Now can we get a GUI and automatic startup for this? ;) )
