ok so this might seem like the worlds stupid question but i am new to the world of mac.. and so my computer was working a few hours ago and i got to turn it on and it wont.. i know i pressed the button a cunch of times but i waited for a while before pressing it again.. the sleep indicate light is on when the lid is closed.. and the computer is plugged into the outlet and the light on the magsafe thing is on.. and its really warm.. and the battery is fine. i checked the book but nothing worked. i know this seems stupid. so sorry. gah.

I'm sorry for asking a really dumb question but are you sure your display isn't all the way dimmed or something?

If it's not - then I'd take this thing into an Apple Store ASAP ;).

that's the best thing to do. I haven't heard anything else about this so i think it may be the screen dimmed. If you live near an apple store, that's what you should do. If not, call up applecare.

Just a question, if your new to macs, and your MBP isn't working, how are you posting? are you using an old PC?

Because it goes into sleep when you close the lid, this tells me it must be on. First check the brightness, and if that doesn't work it may have just half-crashed. Try holding the power button for ten seconds, and you should hear a motor rev down as it will force the machine to turn off. Then try booting it back up.

Same thing happened to my powerbook last night. I did a hard restart and it seemed fine. Give that a try. Might be heat related?

This happened at the Apple store a couple of days ago while I was there. I walked up to the machine which seemed powered off and could not switch it on. Then one of the sales people came up and after about 5 minutes of fiddling it started. Just a blip I wouldn't worry too much. Try the hard reset thingy!!

Hold down the power button for over 10 seconds... see if it appears to shut down (or come on).

Failing that, remove the mag safe, remove the battery. Wait a minute or so, then put the battery back in and see if you can turn it on again - it could've just locked up while in sleep for whatever reason.

    Try cmd+shift+power or cmd+option+shift+power for 5 seconds
This advice after resisting a very strong urge to tell you to put it back in the box carefully, then toss it in the nearest trashcan since it has the guts of a PC

He said it was plugged into the wall. Which as others have said it sounds like perhaps it has crashed (which isn't much to say for a brand new MacBook Pro, and I hate reading these kind of things. But I guess those kind of things could happen with any new computer product). Also indeed, check the brightness. I don't have one, but if this is a problem that seems to happen often, I would consider consulting Apple.
