It would be nice if they could make it that thin, though the rounded back actually feels quite nice. The curvature also makes the back stronger.

leethefilmer, bigger screen? Highly unlikely. I'd love to see a narrower bezel, though.

Is there no way the bezel can be see through or something?

In the future we could have a screen almost up to the edge, or perhaps right up to the edge, and then have a soft bezel that could come and go.

EG, when watching a film the display could expand right out to the edge, but with other apps, the screen could turn black around the edge and give us a bezel to hold.

I'm sure Apple would love to do something like this in the future. The tech is not really here yet for this to happen.

Perhaps another 5 years? :)

I would hope the camera in the back would be in the center vs. far right side. Otherwise you will have to hold it awkwardly.

quick mock

This one seems pretty good - very iPhone 4-esque, which is a natural assumption and keeps with the current design themes. Of course, just when we think we have them figured out...

I wonder if there would be a flash for the camera, though.

And where are the speakers? ;)

I expect it to keep the current design for the most part (+ weight reduction). However, if you look at the new displays, iMacs, iPod touches and iPhones, you'll notice that the glass now 'sits' on top of the metal bezel, instead of inside the metal. The only changes I really expect to see, if any, are ones that brings the design in line with their other recently released and current products.
I expect to see the glass sitting on top of the metal, with the small black plastic ring wrapping around it to protect it. I also expect to see the new, much more tactile (+) and (-) circular volume buttons, and also the matching metal switch and sleep/wake button.

I'm erring on the side of small and subtle, yet much appreciated, modifications.

It'll feel like an old (giant) Leica.

It's a joke. If you look the screen is a little bigger on mine though.

The mods most of deleted my post.

Here it is on my blog if anyone cares to see it:

I have just got word from a friend that works at apple that the iPad 2 will be released May 17th 2011 (I hope this is wrong and it is sooner then may)

I want the new ipad to have an iP4 shape (like the 2nd mock up).

I also want the silver buttons from the IP4 instead of the black plastic buttons.

I also want it to be as thin as the IP4 (what are the hiding in there? look at the iTouch4!!1)

It'll most likely look like the current gen, with a camera on the front and back and a little thinner/lighter. Personally, I really hope they don't add a back camera. Taking pictures with a 10in. device must be hella awkward and I really can't see people using that camera very often.

I think you're probably right. My guess is that if they add a back camera, they'll give it a dedicated shutter button. Or at least develop some crazy new anti-shake algorithm.

From Apple insider. http://www.appleinsider.com/article...touch_like_back_wide_range_speaker_rumor.html

====================================================
Japanese Mac blog MacOtakara published the rumor Thursday, citing an "anonymous Chinese source."

According to the source, the LCD screen on the next-generation iPad will stay the same size, while the new tablet will be 3mm smaller, reportedly measuring 239mm by 186mm. The current iPad, which measures 242.8 mm by 189.7 mm, was criticized for its wide bezel when it was first unveiled in January.

Apple will reportedly change the back of the new iPad to be "flat like an iPod touch," which would also resolve criticisms that the iPad's curved back is impractical. According to the report, the Ambient Light Sensor has been moved to the "upper center of the rear panel" and has a new 3mm slim hole.

The rumor also suggested that a slot on the bottom of the device, which was spotted in early case designs, is actually a "large wide-ranged speaker unit covered with metal mesh."

Production of the new iPad has allegedly already begun, with a tentative shipping date of mid to late January, the report noted. Recent reports have suggested that Foxconn will begin shipping the iPad 2 to Apple in January or February. Apple could ramp up production capacity of the iPad to as much as 6 million per month.

A second rumor that the next iPad will have two cameras--a front camera for FaceTime and a rear camera equipped for recording video, was labeled as "unreliable information" by the blog.

========================================================
Seems to discount a two camera solution which makes sense. A lot of people asking for that rear camera are forgetting that camera devices on phones are forbidden in a lot of business environments that would like to use the iPad. A flatter back makes sense but I just pray it is not a shiny iPod Touch type back. That big slot talked about is NOT for an SD card but a bigger speaker port. I'd like the thinner black rim too.
Getting close to Jan and the rumors should start getting better.

The speaker grill is interesting. Doesn't really seem like Apple's aesthetic, but then again they did release the first gen Touch with the oblong wifi spot. Was really hoping for the SD card slot, but somehow deep down I knew that wasn't going to happen.

I also read on a Mac 9-5 or whatever the site is about a Jan release date, maybe it's coming sooner than later? weird seems to quick, like what's couple weeks away I doubt it

So you want it to only have space for the iTouch's battery, or would you like it to be thicker so it can have a big battery?

I would obviously like an iPad shell but an iPod touch battery. That would be sweet, what a great suggestion. Are you einstiens prodigy?

Can someone do a mockup, but with the old MBA style USB flap, at the bottom right, open and closed, for the potential SD card slot and mini-USB?

I would do one; however, I'm on my iPod touch.

Look at the iPhone 4 and you have a clear indication of where things are heading.

Although I think it will be a full metal back, like the current iPad but with a much narrower bezel.

The iPad 2 will probably have a similar design to the iPhone 4.
However, unfortunately, I think that apple will introduce a few great features in the iPhone 5 and a design change like, touch sensors at the back. And then, the few month old iPad wont have *touch sensitive back.*

Like the gyro.
