Well you should of posting a thread saying 9'7 inch iPad owners that have bought the mini and sold there 9'7 inch version
Something on them lines then you wouldn't get so much hassle back

Hi. I think your experience is characteristic of what I saw in the Apple store--people have an immediate "wow" reaction when the they use the mini due to the light wieght and smaller size. Side by side with the full size ipad, it feels like a breakthru product, even though it is largely year old tech.

exactly!! I had a mini and returned it for a 4 for that exact reason. website text is terrible on the mini in my opinion. I guess someone who hasn't used retina wouldn't notice but I gotta laugh when people say they don't notice the difference..

Yep, the iPad mini's display is a fine display and lots of people even find it sharp and clear, but if you're used to the 264 ppi display of an iPad 3/4 than it's all just blurry.

i played with a mini in the apple store yesterday for the first time. until then i didnt see the point of the mini at all and was happy with my ipad 2.
within about a minute i was sold and was stood playing with it for a good 20 minutes, put my ipad up for sale last night and took a deposit on it today!
the mini is so nice in the hand, and when i look at mine now it looks so dated in comparison.
i thought the screen of the mini looked better than my 2 but text is still not as sharp as my ip4. if the only way you can possibly bear to look at text is if its the higest resolution possible, then stick with your retina iPad. i on the other hand and going with the mini and quite looking forward to it.

OP, it's simple really. Retina screen vs lightweight and handy.

Use mom's mini for a while. If you can stand the screen and love the size, get a mini. If you can't stand the screen, keep the 3 until there is a retina Mini.

If you can stand the screen then replace your iPad 3 with the Mini. Play with your mom's Mini for a week before deciding. I was sold on the iPad mini within minutes of playing with it at the store. I love retina, but the form factor/size and weight is great.

I did the same thing you are looking to do and I have no regrets.

The display difference is there at first but you adjust to the mini's display eventually.

The form factor and weight difference make a huge difference.

OP, you should be capable of making such a decision by yourself. That is, finding the balance between the pros and cons of each and deciding upon it. There's really no need to ask 'the world' what to do.

Since you are a teenager, it's okay. But this is not why the Internet was invented.

Furthermore, my advice woud be to pick the iPad Mini. I sold an iPad 3rd Gen and decided to go with an iPad Mini. No issues or regret.

You apparently are young and the screen on the mini probably doesn't bother your eyes. I have "old eyes" and as appealing as I find the mini otherwise, I take one look at that screen and know it wouldn't work for me. I love my iPad 4. In your case the portability of the light weight mini may override the sharper screen on the retina iPad. If you love your mom's mini go ahead and buy one.

I sold my iPad 3 for the mini and haven't looked back. I use the mini so much more than any previous iPad because the size and weight makes it so easy to take anywhere. My full size iPads almost were always only used at home, the mini is perfect to take out and about. At times I do miss the Retina-Display, but it's a compromise I've gotten used to.

Hate? The iPad Mini is nice if you value small size and weight over large size (better for PDFs) and retina display (seems to come with the weight). I've got no interest in the Mini myself. Glad it is out there, hope you enjoy it, and I am sure whoever you sell your iPad 3 to will be happy to get it :)

As someone who has both the 4 and the mini, I can tell you that the novelty of using the mini for home use might wear off. For travel the mini wins hands down due to portability. At home, I almost always reach for my 4.

Although, the mini makes an awesome controller when playing FIFA 13 on my tv through Apple TV.

I sold my iPad 2 and was torn between getting an 16gb iPad 4 vs a 32 iPad mini. I ended up getting a mini and not regretting that decision.

Seriously though, how is anyone supposed to know your dad died. It's not like people should be expected to consider ALL POSSIBLE SCENARIOS before saying something. It's a public forum, calm down.

I don't know, Menel's comment was totally uncalled for. The OP answered and gave him/her a good slap down in the process. I'd say that's getting what's coming to you. And I'd say the OP was pretty calm.

Just because it's a public forum doesn't mean you shouldn't take responsibility for what you write... yeah?

As for the OP's query. It seems Retina isn't a dealbreaker for you, but what about everything being smaller? If that's fine then I reckon go for it.

Feel compelled to comment that I think you are just fantastic for giving your Mom such a great present! My advice: If you are unable to afford both the iPad 3 and the mini, keep the 3 and wait for the next Mini version. As good as you are to your Mom, I'm sure she'll let you have a Mini fix occasionally :). Merry Christmas!

I don't give a crap. It's a public forum, so you should expect all sorts of replies, and should have a thick enough skin (especially with a dead dad) to be able to handle such responses with tact...such as ignoring them.

Your "slap down" was based in the knowledge that the OP knew something the poster didn't, which was a dead dad. Therefore, the OP was at a distinct advantage, one that the poster couldn't possibly have. So I'm with the poster on this one.

I gave my iPad 3 to my mother, bought the iPad mini and decided it wasn't for me. Having said that it is so light and the bezel is so thin that i can see why people would prefer it over the current Generation size and weight of the iPad. The iPad 5 if trimmed / slimmed will be awesome.

... That being said, I sold my iPad 3 for a mini. No regrets at all.

My only concern is the DISPLAY. I want to get an iPad, but I don't know if get the Mini now or wait for a not-so-probable Retina version. I went to the Apple Store and started playing with the Mini and the Retina, and I can tell the difference.

I wish people would just answer his question without all the unnecessary bashing. There are threads like these all the time...he could be leaning in one direction but just needs that little push to make himself feel comfortable. I think he knows we can't make that decision for him...

With all the said, OP I agree with another poster who said you should give it a week or two to really decide if you like the size and weight of the mini better than the ipad 3's retina display. There is no harm in waiting as you can always sell the ipad 3 later. ;)

Only when you're looking for it. If you just used the damned thing without thinking "retina", it's a great device.
