My New External Hard Drive Does Not Show On My Desk Top

My Externam Hard Drive is not showing on my desk top. It is connected by the usb cord. It is a brand new la Cie 250 GB. Any suggestions? Thank You

Have you formatted it in Disk Utility?

Have you checked to see if disk utility is recognizing it?

Go to the Utilities folder and open Disk Utility
Select the new HD in the left column
Click on the "erase" tab
Format as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
