First off let me clarify I am an Apple supporter, owning the majority of Apple technologies(Ipad 3G on order as well).

My issue is why Apple chooses to manufacture in China? Apple could manufacture in the U.S., still be profitable and provide thousands of jobs that are much needed in this country.

I feel Apples image is tarnished by a business model that takes such welcome technologies that are developed here and chooses to manufacture China.

I want Apple to continue to grow and be the industry leader they are, I just wish they would consider moving their manufacturing to the U.S., and give something back to the economy that has been so supportive of them.

I'm not paying $1,200 for an iPad just so a U.S. worker can make it.

And that is why they don't manufacture in the U.S.

Probably has a lot to do with the fact that the suppliers of all the parts for the units are in China/Taiwan as well.

And it's NOT a company's responsibility to "give back" to any one country. Our cost of labor is WAY higher, and our environmental laws make it more expensive to do manufacturing here. China doesn't seem to care about their environment, and their people will work for peanuts, so they get the jobs.

Sucks, but that's life. Don't like it? Complain to congress to reduce business taxes and quit trying to suck cash from companies (which just ends up getting passed along in higher priced goods to the consumer) and instead start learning to live within the budget and stop wasting public money on porkbarrel projects!

I think a more appropriate question is what electronics are still made in America?

    Why single out Apple?

it would be much more expensive.

if you are willing to pay the higher prices then you can argue for something being made in the US.

also if it means that much to you then dont buy from companies that manufacture in foreign countries. (which will be harder and harder to do since our economy is becoming more global)

I think you are failing to understand why china makes the devices! The simple answer is manufacturing costs are 50%+ cheaper in china when compared with the u.s.

Your average Chinese factory worker isn't paid for Heathcare, sickness and in most cases holidays. Take that plus a very low wage and you cut costs in a huge way.

Apple has moved manufacturing elsewhere for the same reason just about everyone else has. It is substantially cheaper to manufacture elsewhere, and if you're not obsessive about controlling your costs then you're not going to remain competitive. Apple creates a lot of jobs in the US as it is, and arguably their high margins let them take additional risks to grow into new areas that do more for the economy than manufacturing would.

All businesses are going to do whatever they can do to maximize profits. That means keeping costs low and selling them for the highest price the market will bear. Apple does this just like every other company.

It is just the way the global economy works.

The United States government through its taxes and over regulation has made it impossible for the manufacturing of products within its borders to be competitive with other countries, that is why Apple and everyone else outsources abroad.

Today there is more economic freedom in China than there is in the U.S.

Sure we get to vote, but look at what who get to vote for!

Agreed. Making their units in the US would make them absolutely non-competitive. We already pay a premium for Apple equipment. This would make it worse.

BESLC, the simplest answer and the one that makes the most sense is Corporate Greed"! When all the jobs disappear from here then all those supporters of cheap china made goods will be saying "what happened to our jobs"?

I hope you are kidding with this ipad would be &1,200 nonsense. more people would have jobs, and more people would have higher wages. A much more fluid economy. Apple is making HUGE mark ups on their products now, they cold afford to take A $150 hit per machine, and still be making billions. I guess our tight regulations to protect the environment are just stupid! Silly lawmakers trying to save our planet, and reverse the horrors we have done to it. Who elected them!?!?! But i guess your right, manufacturing here would be very difficult and very expensive. Thats why dell prices are so much higher than apples. Oh wait... they come in cheaper. Welp, there goes that argument. If apple cares about the environment and working conditions like they claim, they would be here. But they are playing everyone on it, and i dont see how people see past it. Its pretty ridiculous nobody is willing to stand up for any human rights anymore, just because you dont see it happen doesnt mean they arent fellow HUMANS being exploited at sickening rates. Wake up, people.

You just said the words economic freedom and china in the same sentence. hahaha. Its cheaper there do to oppression, and your precious apple is all kinds of for it. How about accepting these taxes that pay for your roads, new libraries, parks, soon healthcare, law enforcement, the list just goes on and on. Thats how america is, and if companies dont like it and are outsourcing their labor, they should not get the same tax cuts other companies get.

    1) Dell only does FINAL assembly here in the US... (ie, put square peg into the hole) NOT Mainboard fab or any of the other stuff that requires really nasty chemicals and such. And BTW, Apple does some of that here in the USA for BTO systems as well...

    2) nobody said that having worker or environmental protections was wrong, but realize that they DO make it tough for us to look competitive on the bottom line when a corporation is looking where to manufacture things.

    3) By your arguement, if they make things here in the USA, at drastically increased cost, nobody else in the rest of the world would be able to afford them. The US market is roughly 300M people... There's another 5.7+ Billion out there to sell to!

Frankly, if you want to complain about US not getting jobs you need to look at 3 things:

    1) corporate tax structure which penalizes companies from doing stuff in the USA.
    2) higher labor costs (not much you can do about that. We're a mature economy, our standard of living is very high, so our labor costs are high.)
    3) Congress running INSANE deficits putting this country farther and farther in the hole.

Go do a little reading on fairtax.org.

You argument makes no sense. If Apple took a hit on their profits, they would simply hire fewer workers to maximize their profits. Who are we to tell Apple they are making TOO MUCH money? People whine about how their 401Ks tanked, then complain about companies making huge profits and corporate greed. You can't have it both ways.

As far as human rights go, of course China is behind the rest of the world. Apple does make their suppliers comply to a higher standard.

Think about in America apple would have to pay $20-30 and hr to factory workers. In china they only have to pay that weekly.

You guys are just too far out of touch to explain this too. And dell doesn't do all manufacturing in the US, but its by far a bulk of it. I like to know alot about a company before i buy from them, and right now i have no apple products because i can agree with their corporate philosophy. They sent a quality testing crew to the china factory before it was exposed and said everything was fine. They are a horrible company, and try to act like they are all kinds of responsible.

You better check on that... A good portion of those Ford and GM cars are actually manufactured in Mexico and Canada (gee, thanks NAFTA!) And worse yet, a large % of the parts going into those aren't even made in North America.

You own no Apple products and call them a horrible company. May I ask you why you signed up for an Apple discussion forum yesterday?

Your facts about Dell's domestic manufacturing are just plain wrong. Dell closed its Austin plant and is closing their last remaining US plant in Winston-Salem NC this year. They will transfer that plant's work to China and Mexico. A full 95% of Dell's notebooks are made in Malaysia and China.

Even if final assembly was done in the US, those components used in that final assembly are made overseas.

Not sure where you got your info, or how old it is, but these facts are easily found online with very little effort.
