    iCloud email meets my needs in every way but one. It works great on all my Apple devices and it's lean and easy to use like an email system should be...BUT;

    I can't adopt it as my primary email until they make it so I can easily configure non-Apple devices to access it. I understand they are trying to lock people in but I'm not going to use the web interface every time I'm on a non iOS or OSX system.

    I switched to iCloud completely but for professional reasons, I also need to have a windows-based machine. I installed iCloud for Windows, it's easy and will configure Outlook to work with iCloud calendars and mails... But I also have one issue: some folders in Outlook can't be removed so when I look at my mailbox, I now have a "Junk items" folder and a "Junk" folder. "Sent messages" and "Sent items". It looks ugly... But then again, I don't use it much, so I'm fine with that.

    Here is how to setup iCloud email on Thunderbird which can be used on OS X, Linux, and Windows. I assume you could use the settings posted there in any IMAP compliant mail program. I don't see anything at locking you in to Apple.

    Needs conversation threading with the online interface.
