Regarding fixing it, it has needed repaired about three times.
Its psu died, its motherboard died and i'm not even sure about the third time.
It all adds up and it doesn't feel worth it any more.

Reading this thread has been very helpful so far but i must say, it has tempted me to pay a lot more than I initially planned!
Any further input would be appreciated; i've really enjoyed reading each reply.

As it stands, right now i'd be inclined to get the imac but if I find it appropriate i'd definitely consider the macbook.

i would definitely recommend the any model macbook... it gives portability and yet they are fast at the same time

I really am torn between the options but is it better to wait for leopard, anyway?

If you can, hold out for Leopard. Most likely the mini should see an update by then to a Core2Duo processor. Since one of the 'features' that apple is pushing with 10.5 is that it can run 64-bit, which is what the core2duo is. I would guess that all Macs would be 64-bit by the time 10.5(Leopard) is released.

At the least, you get a 'free' OS upgrade by waiting. (At least a $129 value)

go into debt & get the 24" w/ lots of RAM

it's a great computer w/ a beautiful screen

it'll save you more in the long run

buying slow/barely usable computers at the low end isn't worth it unless all you do is surf & word processing.

get the 24.

I guess that i'll have to wait either for a mini refresh or leopard.

Any Mac bought today is not going to be slow and barely usable. Even Macs from 6 years ago can run Tiger fine (if a bit slow).

Yes, i've thought about price now versus value and nearly every machine they sell now seems future-proof for a decent while.
I forgot to say, if they bring out that long-rumoured ultraportable, my decision's made!

For those wondering, i'm still using the wii casually but depending on how close a purchase is, i might dig out an old linux laptop with a broken screen and dead battery. How delightful.

I'm surprised that no-one has supported the mini!
Does nothing lie in store for it?
I wouldn't use a Mini as a main computer, but I'm thinking of getting a refurb mini and an eyeTV hybrid and just stick it under the TV.

I was looking forward to the :apple:TV but a Core Duo mini with a 60-80GB HD, wireless G and full OS X would replace my dead VCR and the DVD player, and with VNC I could control it from one of our other Macs and use it as the main media machine to download from iTunes. And it would support HDTV when I upgrade in a year or two. As I need more space I could add an external HD firewire/USB hub. The initial extra $200-300 seems more worth it each time I think of what :apple:TV brings.

As for your original question, you really should consider a MacBook. You might think you won't need the mobility (and you probably don't NEED it), but I'm telling you, you'll know what you've been missing when you can kick back on the sofa with it on your lap. I have an iMac, my wife has a MacBook, and I envy her mobility.

I've been encouraged (if not forced!) by someone to get it fixed professionally but i've really had enough of throwing money at this machine every few months.

I've decided basically that the macbook seems best and i've wanted one since it was released anyway!
I guess that now it's just a matter of waiting for either leopard or a refresh.

Thank you everyone!
Any further replies would be great as i've really enjoyed reading them.

I have a macbook and my gf has an imac (both core duo). The macbook is a very nice computer, but the imac is somehow much more drool-worthy. I'd get that, unless you really need portability.

I'm just as confused now as i was earlier!
I don't specifically need a portable but surely it's more versatile?
I wouldn't mind trading some screen size for its features but it would either have to have decent storage or my 80Gig iPod would be a bit pointless!

Hello! :D First of all, now when I've got a MacBook for my birthday :D and still have my 17" iMac, I can say, that the extra storage of the iMac is very great, and the screen on a MB is just too small, especially, if its your only machine. Its fine on the go, but when at the desk, I'd like something bigger.

Second, it doesnt feel safe enough, if the only computer you have is laptop. Maybe its because i've had a lot desktops and no laptops ;)?

Also, if you dont really need protability, their no need for a laptop. Some people may get laptops instead of desktops because it can "save desk space", etc, but in reality, laptop takes even more space than the iMac or Mac mini does (surely less than a Mac Pro)

If you dont need portability, but think it'll be nice to have, after a couple of going outs with you MB, you'll use it more and more on your desk, so the "portable" part becomes useless

How about the 2.0 GHz 17" model? The entry-level one is a bit crippled, but the upgraded model is a nice machine. I might be a bit worried about the screen size, but perhaps you could use your existing monitor along with it for plenty of extra real estate.

A bit crippled LoLz but yeah I would personally go for the upgraded 17" and if you want a real treat hook up your moniter, like this wise fellow just said :)
