i'm in the position for a new laptop, but not in such a dire need that i cant wait a few months for the next update, if i feel it's worth it. but, if it's just a faster processor speed, i dont feel like waiting. i'm looking at the 17" high res model.

so my Penryn questions. is it true (or likely) that because of the 45nano tech that it will run cooler? the current ones i've seen seem fairly hot to me. being cooler might be reason enough alone to get me to wait.

are they likely to change the ram the mbp takes? because of the good deals around the net lately i have already bought the 4gb of ram needed for the mbp. will this likely be the same ram the refreshed mbp uses? i'm not against selling it if i have to. but i'd rather not.

and finally. If the refresh included the led screen like the 15" models, is that likely to include the high def 1900 res screens also? led screen isnt really a big feature to me. and if it's not going to impact the hd screen anyway, that's a moot point when deciding to wait. but i've seen no evidence that the led screens are capable of the 1900 res on a 17" screen. and i'm not gonna wait another year just for that feature. when looking at store models i cant even tell the difference. but i guess it's more of a lifespan issue.

any thoughts? if Penryn will mostly just include speed increases i dont really feel like waiting. and i'm definetly not waiting another year for the next expected big update.

I definately would like to hear the answers to your questions. Just so you know man, your not the only one waiting to see what anouncements happen. I had not even thought about weather the HD screen COULD/COULD NOT be LED. I just assumed that it would happen in the next update.

Other than Santa Rosa, the 17" hasn't seen any improvements.

I'd like to see an eSATA port, (it woudn't be that expensive to inclue a port on it.) an LED backlit screen and more BTO hard drive options like the 200GB 7200 RPM. Heck, more slots for ram would be great too.
