My Photo S,tream Help Required

Hi

I'm a total mac novice and I'm trying to free up some icloud space for my Mum on her iPhone. I've enabled her 'My Photo Stream' on her Mac in iPhoto and can see the pics from the iCloud in iPhotos fine.

My question is though - are those photos now actually on the Mac's drive? or can I only see them because photo stream is enabled? and if they are not on the mac's hard drive how do I get them on there so that I can delete what's in the cloud to free up the cloud space?

Sorry, probably a really simple issue but could really use some help.
