    - 17" MBP Mid-2009 with AppleCare expiry 11/12.
    - Battery was functional and had 84 charging cycles.
    - Was unable to press trackpad so suspected bulging battery.
    - Dropped off laptop at Genius Bar on Thursday and told them above.
    - Called on Friday and told that repair was complete.
    - Genius bar rep said "normally batteries aren't covered under AppleCare but because it was affecting trackpad functionality battery would be replaced free of charge."

    Hope this helps.

It's well-documented that batteries are covered by the warranty and by AppleCare, in the case of defects.

This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

Are they sure batteries aren't covered by AppleCare?

I had taken my MacBook Aluminum in because of a logic board issue, and they pointed out the battery was bulging and i didn't even realize because it wasn't servere. They just grabbed a new one off the shelf and popped it in before going on to diagnose the rest of it.

Edit: Oops, I posted too slow.
