chargeback process update

Well, it seems I was wrong about the chargeback process.

I spoke to Discover Card and was told that they can not do a chargeback for the rebate. They can't even put a hold on the bill.
I asked what my options were if I took the entire purchase back to the Apple store (laptop, printer, and iPod) and wasn't allowed to return it.
She told me that at that point, I could do a chargeback for the entire amount!

I really like my macbook, but there's no way I'm keeping it if Apple hoses me on $300 in rebates.
It's good to know I have at least one option remaining to get my money back.

Update:

I had to go down to the apple store and get a new receipt with the education discount prominently printed on it. Fortunately, the girl there was really helpful and did it for me no questions asked -- Didn't even ask me for my student ID again -- So I was really happy and comforted.

So I faxed in the my information to the rebate department.

... And I haven't gotten any word from them since. When I call they say they don't "see it yet". My information still doesn't come up on the website. I'm still very frustrated over this, I'll admit. I feel like I'm in the dark now.

Sucks.

Someone earlier said that calling the rebate hotline yields very "un-apple-like" support, and I have to agree... The rebate process is painful and definitely takes away from the so-called "apple experience".

Hopefully my rebate gets cleared though, I do like my macbook a lot, and having this hang over my head makes me unfortunately bitter about it.

Happy ending

After a lot of work, and a lot of help from a very helpful Apple Care Customer Rep, I've finally received my two rebate checks for the iPod and Printer.

The Rep was great. He called me twice a week to keep me posted on the status of my rebates, had me mail the appropriate forms via confirmation mail, and wouldn't give up.
Great job!

So keep calling Apple customer relations or support until you get the right rep. It makes all the difference in the world.

Now I can go back to enjoying my macbook...
