Ok, I get the postal carrier deal. But dude, how long have you been driving? Even if you're not quite spot on with the date I would venture to guess that if you know something comes up every year then why not just do it? Stop relying on others to remind you and if iCal is suddenly not capable of sending proper reminders (you're the first to report this I believe) then use another method of reminding yourself.

As for the post office thing, you can and should (if you're really serious about the issues) go above your local office staff and file complaints. You best be prepared to back up your claims though.

As far as cost, in CA if your registration has been expired less than 6 months it is a fix it ticket. Meaning you fix it and then go show the judge that you fixed it. If it's over 6 months past due the cops can impound your car.

I'm trying to work out what the UK equivalent for this is. ...

The tax disc (road tax) would be the equivalent. The 'registration' in the US just comes in the form of an annual sticker to put on your license plate and a piece of paper you should keep in the car at all times. (at least IIRC in the states I lived in) But to get your registration you do have to pass an emissions/etc test every so often (like MOT) so that must have been part of the OP's problem with registration.

what ever happened to something called personal responsibility?

If you spent as much time as I do on the road you would know that personal responsibility and automobiles just don't go well together in the U.S. anymore.

Perhaps weigh stations should randomly pull in cars from the road and give them full Level 1 inspections. If they can do it with trucks why not cars? Maybe I should start writing to my favorite politicians... :D

^^ That's just the thing: I'm in and out of car all the time, I check my oil, I check transmission fluid, I even regularly figure out my gas mileage; But I don't 'check all my stickers' every time I get in or out.

Once again, I accept it's my fault for not catching the renewal, but I just wish I had gotten the stinkin' reminder like I was s'posed to..
