Me: "Hello Apple?" :)

*Three weeks later* ::changes Sig to: MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz::

haha. that made me crack up

as for takeing it apart i will whatever happens seeing as i am an apple certified technician.

Wow, sad for the iBook, but yeah, try and lurk a replacement out of them, 'course an MB.:D

no responce from the SJ emails so i took the thing apart to whip the HD out and back stuff up and take a look at the damage, this is a quick pic from my isight, it's not very dramatic but whenever you try turning the ibook on it gets very very hot at that point.

Dell took care of it for me, so tell Apple "Well, I heard Dell replaces smoking notebooks for free. Does Apple?". I had an Inspiron 5150 smoke and burn a hole in my couch and they sent me a 17" Inspiron 9300 :D. I love it, and Dell did it OUT of warranty. Try to convince Apple to do the same.

Well, the Inspiron is cheap! Probably costs Dell $1 to produce and $10 to pay UPS to ship to your door...

On the other hand the same Mac will probably cost Apple a lot more!

just got a "hello I'm calling on behalf of SJ" email, they are taking it in on monday and then will be "remedying the situation"

I have called in a couple of machines that have smoked or produced a burning smell and APPLE WILL IMMEDIATELY ESCALATE THE ISSUE. You don't have to threaten them or anything like that. Let them know the machine started smoking very badly and produced a caustic smell that quickly filles the room. they will pass the call onto a prooduct specialist and then some rep from apple who will ask you a series of questions, ie: did any get hurt, did you call the fire dept, etc. They should offer you a replacement, or repair for free.

Apple takes things like this very seriously...

yeah, thats basically what they did, though what's slightly worrying me is my sister said she hasn't heard the fan go on in the last few months, though it always did run cool and she does like no intencive stuff and uses it on a desk and the fan apears to be relatively clean and in working condition, i'll run 5v through it to see if it spins, though where it failed is no where near where the fan blows.

oh and i hold all the certs you hold and more, just never had a mac go up in smoke.

Eerily familiar!

Hi,
New poster here... My G3 IBook is admittedly getting long in the tooth and I was getting set to buy a new Macbook in the near future. I just took my laptop with me on my honeymoon to synch the iPod, etc, and one day it shut down in my lap suddenly. Weird... then we went to plug it in and see if it was a battery issue, and powered on, got the boot chime and then nothing again... So I pressed the power button once more, got a small flame from the back of the keyboard near the num lock key and some acrid smoke, so I freaked out, yanked the plug and the battery and was left to scratch my head.

I'm quite soured now on the prospect of another Apple laptop after this... Even 3 year old laptops shouldn't be doing such dangerous things! FYI, I've taken my laptop to get the logicboard replaced not once, but TWICE so I don't think this is the issue.

Interested to see how your ordeal turns out, Hector.

definately call apple, at the moment engineers are thinking about stuff and they said they'll call to take the thing in soon.

this is the oldest ibook g4 available, so it's not that much newer than yours.

thanks hector...

so i used the "email steve jobs" trick ... got a reply from an apple executive relations rep within 12 hours ("calling on behalf of our CEO steve jobs") and i found time to talk to a product specialist within 2 days (just got off the phone now). the original rep promised to call back within a few hours, will post the result soon. granted, i did not exaggerate the damage since i was there at the incident and extinguished the potential fire quite quickly with a smother... whatever the resolution, at least the company gave me significant attention on this issue. my local apple repair centre was not very helpful!
