Good luck with everything - stay safe. Best to your family as well, as it will likely be harder on them, regardless of where you're sent.

Oh man, who am I going to discuss college basketball with, I mean its MIDNIGHT MADNESS THIS WEEK! We're probably late making the thread already.

If you need something to give you that warm homey feeling remember that Illinois is better than North Carolina ... well at least in my fantasy world.

Hey, I'm still here! ;)

We'll beat up on NC together while he's away. :D

All best to you, Stu, and thanks for your service.

Looking forward to hearing from you when you're able.

Stu you know what kind of ship you will be riding?

The kind on a street corner with a street address!

Looks like 12 months of draining pens for the Navy, I will be assigned to a manpower/readiness group. Basically I will be the @55whole recalling other navy folks.
I can do that duty standing on my head, still will stall my career and frustrate the family, but nothing compared to what many are doing. 2 months ago I was nearly assigned to the Horn of Africa, while operationally more interesting, harder on the family.
Shouldn't be difficult duty at all, never mind the thread. Thought I was SWA bound.

At failing maybe! Doh!

Welcome to the Navy Mr Williams

Well today it turns out that A) I will not get mobilized B) I will get mobilized as planned C) I will be mobilized for an additional 6 months and go to the Horn of Aftrica.

I am so dizzy I am stunned. I feel like I just lived the "Who's on first" routine.
Glad I haven't bought any new Macs yet (video chat).

actually, the best case scenario would be:
a) buy the macs (you have a good reason)
b) don't get mobilized
c) keep the new macs
;)

I hope everything turns out well for you. My brother in law was on the way to Iraq, but his ship has been routed to Korea instead. If it isn't one place, it is another.

Hang in there!

Good Luck! My girfriend is in the Navy, whom I have lived with for almost three years just left last week on her det, (somewhere in the middle east). She doesn't know how long she is going to be over there. Her orders were for 2 months, but it may end up being 3 - 4 months. STAY SAFE!

UPDATE:

Orders cancelled. Seems that someone else that was supposed to go to Africa has diabetes and can't go overseas, so they gave him my job. I thought I was going to take his, but someone else had already been a backup volunteer.
The long and short of it; I'm not going anywhere. Back to work, nothing to see here.

Out of curiousity, what did you do in the Navy? I served six years as a nuclear trained electrician. Sub volunteer, even. It was that or guaranteed assignment to a carrier, which I did not want.

Welcome back to being an armchair warrior.
