I personally couldn't do it since the Watch and iPhone are COMPLETELY different devices filling COMPLETELY different purposes, with some occasional overlap. For example, I could NEVER use the camera system on my iPhone on my Watch, nor could I do more productivity things like file management, etc. which is crucial for work! Also, you can't do FaceTime/video conferencing on your watch, nor would it be a pleasant experience if Apple were to put a front camera on it, for some reason.

However, I do get what you're talking about to where the Apple Watch, in certain situations and use cases, could replace the need for your iPhone. For example, whenever I run out to do a few errands, and I don't need to use my iPhone's exclusive features, yeah, I'll leave it behind and just wear my Apple Watch. One thing that I can't wait for Apple to do is to make the Apple Watch completely independent from your iPhone so that you can set it up without one. When that day finally comes, that'll be a BIG step for the Apple Watch being its own device!

After a week with the watch, I am pleased with what it’s opening up for me. I am leaving my phone behind much more often with the comfort that I can receive calls and texts and can stem music and podcasts without my phone being on me.

Do I still have and use my phone this week? Absolutely. Is what watch a full iPhone replacement? No, not even close. I think the YouTube video above misses the point. What the Apple Watch Ultra does is it let’s me better dictate when and how I use my my phone because I don’t HAVE to use it to be accessible or listen to music and podcasts.

I do think that the Apple Watch Ultra is the device that brings me closer to how I felt about my first iPod and the first generation iPhone.

Having said that, the experience could be had with a standard Series 8 with cellular…but the battery life on the Ultra is a huge differentiator.

This is sort of what I'm thinking. Just stick a huge battery in the thing, and then maybe cellular isn't just a gimmick.

Also, it's nice that it's cool in other ways :)

Maybe another comparison would be the iPad as a Laptop replacement. God knows ,many of us have traveled this route.

When my Apple Watch Ultra arrives, I will stop carrying my iPhone all the time and more often just wear my Ultra and use with my AirPods. How about you?
Look at this guy's video on YouTube. He did just that for one day. Results was not so great.
That being said I am still getting the Ultra but when it's used on its own and connected to cellular, battery drain is more significant.

I do not think this is a valuable review of the watch. He's using it non-stop to search, navigate, stream, workout, etc. If I had a day where I needed all of those services, I would grab my phone for sure. Especially when I'm carrying around a huge backpack...why would I carry all that junk around and not bring a phone?

I mean, If I used my iPhone as much as this guy used his watch, it wouldn't last the day...

Well, I wouldn't say that there's no value in this review since he basically took his Ultra to the limit, showing that, when pushed to the max, it can almost last a day, which is impressive since a Series 7 or 8 would only last half as long, if that! In that regard, I'd say it shows how much of an improvement the 70% bigger battery is! Now, we just need something similar in the non-Ultra models to please everyone!...

I agree that the review is interesting for sure. I like seeing it stress tested, and the watch held up well all things considered. But since this is so far outside the intended (or even inspired) use of the watch, it's not very helpful in deciding to but the device or informing on how best to use it--IMHO :)

How reliant on the iPhone are various watch models? I’d honestly love it if I could leave my iPhone at home but I don’t really understand the whole iPhone/watch ecosystem.
The watch uses a noticeably greater amount of battery when not paired to a phone

That’s true: the Apple Watch was meant to be paired with an iPhone, with on and off use with cellular, be used to exercise lightly to moderately with, and be used for quicker interactions that aren’t meant to drain the battery intensively. With that said, the Ultra should be advice and beyond the needs that its users will buy it for and serve them well for a few years!

I agree here, when I choose to not bring my phone, it's because I know I'm gonna be a light user. Connectivity is not my no 1 priority. It may be a run, a walk in the woods, to do some errands etc. And sometimes, I just don't want to have my phone with me, but I still have to be reachable. It is pretty liberating actually.

But when I have days like in that video, I'd never put myself through the hassle. The technology is here to work for us, not the other way around.

You have to be reachable or you want to be reachable. If you want to be reachable then this is a great solution. If you have to be reachable then it might just be the shackle of slavery!

The issue isnt the hardware. Its the software. Watch OS9. Is terrible. I can name like 30 features the software needs to implement. Hell we cant even change our ringtone on the watch

Did you report your gripes to Apple? Because complaining here will not change anything!

It’s not all black and white for me. Unfortunately I still have to work for a living, but leaving my phone means that I only receive the most important messages. There’s nobody forcing me to do anything. 😊

It’s also peace of mind for my wife who worries about everything all the time 🙈😊 She can follow me on Find my when I’m out on my motorcycle. Shackles? No not at all, I call it freedom!
