They replaced a fan and the battery on my out of warranty 2017 MacBook Pro for free. My mother's 2017 iMac just broken and they gave her the 2020 version for free. It really depends on the person you're dealing with at Apple.

For out of warranty things, this site is great: https://getakko.com

I had exactly the same issue with my 2017 MBP - the screen would go off after a certain angle. I contacted Apple who quoted the standard repair price (approx £600 GBP) which I declined. I took the laptop into an Apple store and luckily had an experienced member of staff who managed to find a way to get the screen repaired by Apple for free.

I also had the butterfly keyboard issue, which was covered by Apple.

Even though Apple did repair these issues I had to do a rethink of my whole approach to my personal computing, and in the end I switched to a small form factor Dan A4 case and built my own portable PC. It involved switching to windows (and in the result discarding a lot of products I had purchased for my mac) but I now have a system I can control, fix and upgrade. I still have my MBP but use it just for occasional XCode builds and entertainment.

Apple's approach to this is confusing. I've had MBPs for years, and repairs were never an issue. Since the problems with the 2017 model I simply can't justify the expense of another premium apple laptop as I fear the design flaws which would emerge later. I'll keep watching, and if they become repairable (I note the new models have removable batteries, which is great) I'll consider one. Until then my next laptop will probably be a Framework https://frame.work/
