My "update" buttons don't work

I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 7. In the App Store I have tons of app updates available but when I click the "update" button, it just opens the app. Also the "update all" button is greyed-out.
Is this because I'm running an old iOS?

if ios7 is old to you then the 4s must be extinct

try a hard reset, hold down lock and home button until the apple logo appears

That won't work. I have seen no explanation as to why this is happening. Here is a thread from a couple weeks ago about it.

I found that if you turn on auto updates, it will be hard to tell it is working, but it will update. I eventually went to 8.XX and it worked for me.
