mysql/java problem

Dude, it's really looking like you hosed your install.

I can't really recommend anything but a reformat, much as you don't like the idea.
 
no no no...we took my extra hard drive and backed up all his important info and apps and then erased his drive and started anew, only putting back all of his preferences and docs and apps.
