Hey, I've been trying to install Mac OS Xfor the past 6-7 hours. I've been following several guides going through MySQL's website to HiveLogic's very detailed guide, but everytime I install the database, I get the mysql.sock error:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

I cmd+shift+G to look for /tmp/mysql.sock and it's not there. It is in the /var/mysql/ folder, but it contains no information whatsoever.

And I also read somewhere that the mysql.sock is created when mysqld is ran in terminal; however, that doesn't exist on my computer (at least where MySql.com says where it is).

Anyway, I just need some help so I can get back to my Ruby on Rails development.

Thanks.

Update:

Typing /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld in terminal gives me this error:
080528 23:19:25 [ERROR] Can't find messagefile '/usr/share/mysql/English/errmsg.sys'
080528 23:19:25 [ERROR] Aborting
