MySQL

I'm looking into setting up a forum sort of thing for my house network, running off my PowerBook. I'm currently downloading MySQL Max now.

Is this a difficult process? Just I have no X11 tools (just wondering if I needed them?), adequate knowledge of servers and internet stuff and no knowledge of the command shell.
Am I a lost cause? Or is this possible?
