I looked at my data usage today and around 12:30, it says 'phone' (where other data usages had phone numbers) and I have entries between 530kb and 12083kb (~12mb). Now that isn't downloaded. That's sent. I don't think sent data contributes to the 200mb/2GB caps. I think those are for download.

An example

Here's 2 files with the data section of my AT&T bill with activity, if anyone would like to get a better idea of what we're talking about. There's 2 iPhones that seem to behave/bill differently. First phone has the "issue" while the second seems to bill data at the times it's actually used.

I like the aggregation idea on a previous post. However, 1) one of the phone's doesn't aggregate. 2) the amount of data doesn't correspond to actual usage.

"Goaliegeek: ...That's sent. I don't think sent data contributes to the 200mb/2GB caps. I think those are for download. "

The amounts that are on the .doc attachments correspond to the totals on my bill. The odd thing is---they're all labeled as "out".

I think we're making progress here on this thread though. (I'm still an app conspiracy theorist.)

I dread calling AT&T and asking them to explain the differences in the billing. (Which I doubt they can.) But I may have to do it, just to be sure.

When my phone is asleep but plugged in, it stays on wifi. I tap the home button and it's still connected with the wifi icon in the status bar.

Odd though, I just checked and I'm still getting those data transfers even though my phone is showing it's connected to wifi if I tap the home button when it's asleep.

Can you tell which way the data went? Is it always downloading to the device? Or going out from the device?

If it's going out from the device, I wonder if it's some kind of automatic Apple user and diagnostics data collection.

(Crash logs are sent via iTunes during a sync if you allow it. This could be something else.)

Just thinking out loud...

I have been in WiFi range (home) and not using my phone away from home since the last cycle and have 16MB of data use.

I suspect that push uses 3G when the phone sleeps, and this accounts for the data use.

Do I recall correctly that OS4 has a feature to keep Wifi connected when sleeping? If so, upgrade to OS4 should help eliminate the mysterious use. For me, this would save 25% of the 200MB data limit per month.

Says it is outgoing on my bill.

It's supposed to be, yes. From Engadget (red box mine):

i have a 3GS with up to date software.
i only have 12 apps, all pushes are turned off, fetch is set to manual. I've kept my settings this way since i got my phone last December. But my data usage is climbing quickly. I talked to AT&T and we ARE responsible for this data, regardless of our inability to control it or even know what it is.
So if you switch to the 200Mb plan, you might be in trouble.
I don't stream video, i don't check weather on my phone. i don't check stocks on my phone and i may get an average of 5 text messages a day. I take pictures occasionally, but i rarely send one in a text or an email, i transfer them with my usb.
My phone is on at night, not asleep, running my white noise application. So it should be able to access the router 9 feet away.
i do have MobilMe and an email account, but i've just turned off everything i can... mail, contacts, calenders, and bookmarks to see if that changes anything.
I too would change my service to the 200Mb plan, (which more and more sounds like a joke from AT&T, as they seem to know about the nightly data push) but i could easily exceed that cap with no effort at all, as could anyone else without ever knowing why.

I just looked at my bill yesterday, and I had this issue too. Every night between 2 and 2:30 a.m., I'd get a pretty large data spike. After combing the AT&T forums, I've found a post that said this was cumulative billing: the data that you use throughout the day doesn't show up on the bill as it is being used; instead, most of it gets combined into a massive charge that apparently shows up in the middle of the night. I wasn't sure at first, but when I look at my bill, every single usage is marked as "sent"... which is weird considering I really send very little. Also, it turns out that Blackberries have this strange data output too, which leads me to further conclude that this is just a weird billing method.

What's weird though is that some people see this behavior while others don't.

Has me interested. Has anyone from uk (preferably on o2) noticed this?
If it has already been mentioned in this thread sorry as I haven't got time to read it all right now.

Unidentified outgoing data

I have same observation. Large amounts OUTGOING in early morning hours. Very curious.

Does anyone know a way to log the transfer ip address?

add me to the list...

after 8 days into my billing cycle... i'm at... are you ready.... 865MB!!!!!!!! had I been on the 200MB plan, I'd be screwed, but I knew that would never be enough.... alas, I would have NEVER imagined that even 2GB wasn't enough!!!!!!

from 7/2 to 7/4, I did some tethering, so data use during those days is somewhat understandable... although I was not connected at 2:30am or thereabouts when many of these MYSTERIOUS data transfers have been occuring... and since then, I have NOT tethered at all... trying to see what the hell is going on with my data transfer being so massive...

even without tethering at all, and using Wifi during my work hours (with good wifi reception), I'm still seeing 40-50mb per night!!!

Only way to stop it is turning off "Cellular Data" at night... But all it takes is to forget and I just blow away another 40-50MB... this is ridiculous...

I even called AT&T about this, yet they simply have no clue what is going on or how to resolve it. My request to be grand-fathered into "unlimited" was met with a "Sir, that is not possible" BS answer... they can, they just don't want to....

My only thought is that maybe this data leakage has something to do with the iphone's crash report process ?? I *think* I remember agreeing to the "send apple crash reports", never thinking it might be a problem... Now I want to first of all check to see if it's enabled, and secondly disable it if it's indeed 'on'.... Anyone know how to block the crash reports or turn them off?? Do I need to do a factory restore? Is there something in iTunes I can reset?

Any apps out there that can log which apps and/or processes are using up data? There has to be a way... Android can do (I believe)... no reason iPhone couldn't... jailbreaking can't come soon enough... :-S

graphed out my data from the data report on my att wireless OLAM...

first 3 day,s 2-4 Jul - included tethering, so that usage is fair... and I accept it as is and always said I could explain that amount... ( although 350MB in one day... ouch ;) )

5-8 Jul, that is NO tethering, NO streaming on 3G... yet still almost about 60MB per day on average...

9 Jul, Cellular Data turned OFF at night... (normal usage of checking emails, web, twitter and FB... nothing out of ordinary)... a more liveable 10MB...

the trend is building... I'm thinking a guilty app responsible for the data... my step is to remove my 3rd party apps and leave Cellular Data on at night, then re-add one by one to see if I can pinpoint what it could be...

update with a couple more nights of Cellular Data turned OFF...

First 2 days (7-2,3,4) I did some tethering, but have NOT since then... 7-8, 9,10,11 Cell data turned off at night.

Any data prior to 12:30 or 1am I take responsibility for since I was awake for it. Anything else is BS if you ask me.

I'll be leaving Cell Data on tonight and the next couple of nights to see what happens...

Note Cell Data turn off starting the night of the 8th - although used data a lot on the morning of the 8th... that's me. But 9, 10, 11, hardly any usage and Cell data turned off at night as well... low and behold, hardly any data used and certainly no 2am transfers, since cell data was off.

Wait a minute -- could this be the iAds data collection?

Has anyone tried opting out of the iAd data collection and seeing if this usage goes away?

http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/201...r-targeted-ads-but-not-our-location-tracking/

This is good... thanks!

I've done this opt-out now, and over the weekend I did 'Reset Warnings' to turn off the crash reporting.

So will see if I can safely leave Cellular Data on at night, or if turning it off is the only way to avoid unwanted night-time data transfers.

I believe I may have found the culprit for me... It's one of two things - not sure which one (maybe a combination of both) since I did both at the same time. I just wanted to avoid data overnight, and not have to constantly turn off Cellular Data (if I didn't have to).

For 3-4 nights, I left Cellular data off, just to prove the data reported early morning wasn't data deferred from earlier in the day. Sure enough, if turning off Cellular Data overnight, no mysterious data showing up early morning.

Then I did these two things:
1) Plugged iP4 into iTunes, CTRL-click on iphone and do 'Reset Warnings', then CTRL-click again and hit 'Sync', and then the "would you like to send Apple crash reports, bla bla bla"... hit "Disagree"

2) go to http://oo.apple.com using your iPhone (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4228)

After doing those two things, I started leaving Cellular Data ON over the last couple of nights.

Low and behold - at worst, 1-2MB overnight and that's from some emails that came in overnight. No huge 40-50MB chunks, or even 100+MB chunks which I've also had...

I don't know which of the two did it, or maybe a combination of both. I don't really care, all I wanted is to eliminate any "unapproved by ME" data being transferred overnight without my knowledge or consent. Seems to be working so far after two nights. Will continue to monitor obviously.

I tried L.C.W.'s methods, one at a time, a few days apart, and noticed no difference in the overnight usage. Very frustrating. I have mail fetch off, and removed my Yahoo mail account from my iPhone (a whole other data use fiasco).

One thing I noticed, though, is that it has nothing to do with data usage earlier in the day. For two days I was very careful about not using anything on my iPhone that required data transfers over the network, and still these mysterious data transfers occurred. I also believe it's not AT&T billing - my son has a Palm phone and none of this occurs on his at all. The really weird part? My other son has an iPhone and gets the transfers, but daughter also has an iPhone and doesn't get the transfers.

For the record, I have an iPhone 4, by son has my old iPhone 3G with iOS 4, and my daughter has a 3G with iPhone OS 3.1. I'm starting to think the culprit is the iOS.

This is very frustrating, and Apple should be fixing it. I checked into my past data usage and discovered my highest data usage for a billing cycle was 65MB, and that was on trips when I used my phone a lot for directions, mail, restaurant info, photo uploads, etc. I figured as such I could easily get away with using the 200 MB plan and save a few bucks. Right after upgrading that 3G to iOS 4, I used well over 100 MB the next billing cycle, without a trip and without using my phone any differently. The culprits were the constant unwanted fetching of my Yahoo mail and these overnight data transfers.

I loved my 3G, but I have to admit, I'm getting disappointed in my iPhone 4 and the new iOS. It's been more hassles than it's worth.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/959275/

I've talked about this in a couple other threads in June. I noticed that starting in June (right around the time the tiered data plans came out) my data usage was a lot higher than normal. I even had one data transfer record that said I used 182MB in one day....and no, I don't stream music or play on YouTube all day long. AT&T has no clue about this stuff. They tried to tell me that Apple updates the software on the iPhone often and it happens over the air...referring to updates to the iOS. Since then I use wifi at home and for July I used a gigabyte less than I did in June. For August I'm gonna try turning off wifi at night when I definitely won't be using the phone to see if it is using data during the night.

My current tactic will be to simply turn off the cellular data feature during the day, so there's no chance I'm accidentally using it, and turning it on at night to see if it transfers data, just to confirm it is doing this whether I use the data through the network or not. I'll try this a few days and see what comes of it.

I'm convinced it's not AT&T, because it's not all AT&T phones or even iPhones, nor am I convinced it's a data billing catch-up of some sort. It's either Apple gleaning info and not fessing up, or some app acting up. I've done the opt out on the iAds thing, and I've done the "don't report crashes, etc" thing, and I was still getting pinged.
