Oddly enough, during the summer, I often hear "explosions" near my apartments. It sounds like two wooden boards being smacked together really hard. There's no construction or anything else going on, but I hear it every summer. Could be kids with firecrackers, but all I hear after the sound are dogs barking. But, mine's in the daylight.

I sometimes hear electrical equipment blow up. Sounds like a loud pop in the distance. Were the flashes bluish/turquoise? Your local power company might know what happened.

Maybe it's a huge underground network of meth labs blowing up. Maybe it's aliens on a cosmic hunting trip, vaporizing a heard of cows with a death ray. :D

My money is on meth-addicted aliens who are vaporizing cows that do not taste like chicken.

The flashes seemed to have been very white/almost blue (like HID headlights), but then again, after the second one or so, I was looking in the other direction!

Unless you like the suspense of it all, why don't you report this to the police and.or city engineering dept., and maybe they can tell you what it is?
Hah, that made me laugh actually.

Well, I would, but my dad thinks that's over reacting. Next time it does happen, we'll call someone.

Do you guys have one of those power station farms near you or a high voltage circuit switching station?

My father calmed my frantic mother and myself, and assured us to go to sleep and that it was probably just a transformer (however, we still has power, so I was leery to accept that answer). I ended up going to bed, having not the slightest idea of what they were.

He's in on it. :)

My initial impression was gunfire, but perhaps the depth of the sound and the accompanying flashes are far too large to be gunshots.

I find it peculiar that your father wrote it off so quickly as something 'not to worry about.' Be suspicious, you have good reason.

mmmm transforming disappearing aliens, or just a transformer haha

i would maybe call the city's non emergancy number next time it happens and get an explanation of what it is.

Like the city will know... Hah. Anyway, my uncle is Police Chief and a good family friend is a captain on the Fire Department. And my dad works for the city... Humm. I actually think he calmed us because he might have really thought it was a transformer, or kids doing fireworks.

I know it wasn't gunfire because I've shot many guns, and these have far more depth then a gun shot.

Someone? Call Dominos Pizza. They'll know what to do. :D

If it is transformers, and you keep hearing them repeatedly, your electrical company has problems. You shouldn't ever hear a transformer blow, and besides, transformers are one big BOOM, not several right in a row.
My guess - kids with Firecrackers/Dynamite. You'd be surprised what you can get in Mexico.
If it happens again, and it's close to you, I'd go ahead and call the police (chances are you'll have to go through 911 if it's at night). If they feel it's important, they'll dispatch police, or if they know what it is, they'll tell you (maybe they've gotten similar calls from your area before).

One time some construction workers in my city came across a field of active bombs from an old train accident carrying them (think it was from World War 2). Bomb squad decided it was safest just to blow them all up. Could hear them miles and miles away. Shook my house.
I don't think what you are hearing is bombs, probably large firecrackers. Just thought this story was interesting.

Gun fire makes a popping noise, similar to firecrackers. What you are hearing may be cannon fire because it's the low-frequency that carries for miles.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

I am reminded of last summer, when new neighbors moved into the house next to mine. After buying the home, they spent several months renovating it and adding an in-ground pool.

One weekend, after they moved in, their teenaged children had a party. My children are 11, 7, and almost 2. After 10pm, I went over and asked if they could keep the noise down. At 11pm, when they began shooting off fireworks (still illegal, here), I had enough.

I snuck over to where they were lighting bottle rockets and zapped them point-blank in the eyes with my 15 million candlepower spotlight, while politely requesting, at the top of my lungs "MY CHILDEN ARE TRYING TO SLEEP!!! KEEP THE NOISE DOWN!!!".

That seemed to do the trick. ;)

I am so glad I am moving, next year.

It might be some type of acoustic cannon to scare animals away. Are they growing any crops in the field? You might want to approach the origin of the noise during the day,“Hello neighbor” type thing.

On a bridge near my house, an audible sound cannon is being used to repel Starlings. Apparently, they love to roost on the lift section of the bridge and their “whitewash” coats the railings, walkways, roadway, etc... Unpleasant for the workers there I’m sure. One time, as I was driving across with my window down, I got to hear it go off right next to me. Quite loud.

sometimes army bases/proving grounds/etc will set off old ordnance... common practice near where i grew up in maryland... (aberdeen proving ground was 15miles or so away)

low muffled rumbles, would shake a house

You wouldn't believe all the people that think that every single jet creates a sonic boom when it flies past... I have to tell them all about "they can't go supersonic over cities" and about how they would feel a sonic boom as well as hear it.

But yeah, its fun to hear bomb go off. Interesting noise.

No...no...no......it's pronounced "Redeemer", hahaha. Seriously though, those are some odd things happening. Any local police have anything to say about it? It seems odd that it keeps happening over and over again...it'll probably turn out to be something simple. Like a bunch of squirrels that got into a tub of nuclear waste, you never know ;)
