Found this cable when I was organizing my desk. At first glance it appears to be a usb male-to-female adapter, but a male usb cable won't fit into the female end. Anyone know what it is?

That's the Apple wired keyboard extension. I have one right in front of me and it does have the bump. Guess they don't want you using it with anything else!

If you have pair of needle nosed pliers, you can easily flatten that metal dimple inside and make it into a universal USB extender.
Aha, I always wondered why they were so hard to get off when using them for regular cable extensions.

It would have been nice if all USB ports and cables had that dimple. It would have prevented a lot of destroyed USB ports from users "forcing" it in.
I can't wait till USB Type-C is more widely adapted.

Just looked at my world Apple keyboard and it has a U channel in it that matches your bump. Never knew it was there.
