Mystery icon on iPhone

An icon suddenly appeared in the top panel of my iPhone screen (4S)..its a lock with an arrow around it. Seems it would be some kind of sync lock, but darned if i can find what it relates to. Would appreciate some advice...at which point I will probably so...oh - of course!
Oh oh...I connected the iPhone with the usb cable and got a"iPhone cannot be synced...unknown error...Help?

double tap home button swipe your finger to the right.. see those ipod controls? to the left is a button that locks your phone's orientation to keep it from going into landscape mode.. tap to unlock it.

I was trying to close a radio app earlier...I must have hit that button. Appreciate your help
