Cant understand why rest of the world wont be able to have proper 5G but only the slowest 5G version. I live in Spain, not Burkina Faso. There would be widespread 5G by the end of the year.
This. Mobile technology and coverage in Europe is better than in US.
Completely wrong decision by Mr “margins” Cook...

iPhone 5s 2020 version hahaha. Tim said this is a new era of making more money not because of design but because of 5G technology.😂

I don't see a difference between the two images, am I blind?
I didn't either, at first. It's most easily seen in the left-most image. About 2/3 of the way down, there is a long oval on the side that is just a bit darker than the rest of the side. I can't really make it out at all on the 2nd (slanted) pair of iPhone images.

So is this a mmWave site right outside my window? Possibly from Verizon?

Dammit, I live in Europe and its my upgrade year from XS Max, no buy from me without mmwave...

Can someone call up Tim and ask him if Verizon is subsidizing the 5G hardware cost for all of us that will never see MMWave 5G, because it is reported that adds about $100 in hardware costs, and most of us don't actually use Verizon. The other carriers aren't going to bother with a inherently flawed bandwidth, and we all get a whole in the side of our phones for it.

You'll be unlikely to live in an area that will see mmwave for several years to come. I think it might be only Verizon in the US now, and only in limited densely-populated city areas. Most of us with our proud new 5G phones will spend most of our time connected to 4G (even 3G) in reality.

FWIW, AT&T has mmWave deployments in 35+ cities in the US but it is Verizon who is taking it much further. Unfortunately, even if you live in one of those AT&T mmWave cities, due to challenges with the spectrum, you're probably not experiencing the benefits (yet).

Spain doesn't have any mmWave spectrum planned for auction in the next few years.

Italy and Finland are the only two countries in Europe that have auctioned mmWave frequencies. The rest of the Europe isn't planning to auction mmWave until the next several years.

Despite the noise around mmWave, the most popular frequency for deployment for carriers are the Sub-6/mid-band ones, particularly 3.5GHz. Because of a combination of speed, range, and its ability to actually penetrate structures.

You have to understand the U.S. lacks the valuable mid-band frequencies, which is why they've turned to mmWave as an alternative. It's not a desirable frequency unless you are for example, in a factory with hundreds of 5G production equipment.

This. There is enough confusion around 5G and having very different versions of it just adds to it. Granted, a Spanish resident could travel to an area with mmWave, but outside of that, there's really no value to having an mmWave capable phone just yet. Give it a year or two. Upgrade to iPhone 12 for widely deployed versions of 5G and worry about mmWave later.

I think many of us in the US will be using Sub-6GHz 5G signal mainly. Only large urban areas, stadiums, large venues, etc... will probably get mmWave. But remember, mmWave signal is a lot more flaky than Sub-6GHz.

iPhone are known to be sold as international devices, so there is no point in the choice. I want to buy my iPhone in the Netherlands and use it at 100% in Italy, Finland or US. Because I’m traveling a lot for business.
do you want to sell me an European model ? Fine, then make it cheaper.

I had an iPhone 4 that couldn’t keep a call connected inside my apartment.
When it got stolen, I got a 4s instead and never again had a call drop.

just cuz you didn’t have issues doesn’t mean others didn’t.
i never said others didn't have issues. don't put words in my mouth.

Europe has picked 26GHz for mmWave. Even if you get the U.S. iPhone 12, it only supports 28GHz and 39GHz mmWave.

Apple took away the power adapter and EarPods. You know Apple won't give you a discount for lack of mmWave antennas.

I feel bad for myself. I have been staring at those images for a long time, I only saw it when you mentioned it.

according to my simpleton knowledge, 4G towers have the long rectangle antennas, and the 5G ones are more squarish. So based on that, those do seem to be 5G ones. But is it mmWave one or sub-6, I don't know. Search for "4g tower" to see the image difference.

I don't get the obsession to get the fast 5G by hugging the cell tower to get the ideal condition.
Gigabit LTE could have been a thing but no we have to put a tower in every street to make it work.

Oh no, they did a Samsung. They should have just put it in for everyone around the world. Does it ever occur to the decision-makers that people might travel to the US or that infrastructure in their own country is built up over time?
You just have to buy a newer iPhone by then.
