So Apple announced in their earnings call that they will have a "future product transition". Given the recent release of the new iPhone, the boringness of updaing Macs or iPods and the growing battle for internet-delivered media, I'd say the time is ripe for an Apple TV update!

We know Apple filed a patent for a Wii-like remote for Apple TV, and we know that Apple is excited about their iPhone App Store (Super Monkey Ball!).

Anyone want to join me in speculating that Apple TV is coming and that it will include Wii-style games downloadable from your couch?

Some bloggers are saying something similar, but adding speculation about support for things like AT&T IP TV (which I think is an on-demand TV service).

I would also hope for DVR functionality and maybe a Blu Ray player (though the latter seems doubtful given expense and the fact that they may hurt their movie download/rental services).

DVR function would be slick... but I would be all about downloadable games!!

Join the already crowded gaming console market in mid product cycle?

    Umm, yeah, no.

I don't think Apple wants to use AT&T services if they don't have to, tying the iPhone to a carrier was just a necessary evil.

+1 for DVR without a subscription, so I can stop paying Tivo monthly fees (no money yet for new Tivo + Lifetime subscription).

I would like all movies on iTunes to be available for rent, too.

The next Apple TV better have a DVR and a Touch Remote over Bluetooth. The Remote with my iPhone is great, but having a smaller touch remote just for the Apple TV that is always connected would be nice, especially for people who do not own Touch's or iPhone's.

The DVR patent Apple published looked amazing, and I hope it gets implemented.

Also, the next Apple TV should house full 1080p support.

iTunes also needs a subscription service for both TV Shows and Movie. HD and SD rentals from the Apple TV should be allowed to be moved to computers (and the reverse as well).

It would be a perfect launch companion to the iPod revamp in September (which currently does not sound to be a major revision this year).

I think it would actually sell well for the holidays.

Have you seen the games for the iPhone/iPod touch? They're pretty sweet! It's an actual, viable gaming platform!

Anyway, Nintendo can't produce Wii's fast enough! They're sold out most places evan after being on the market for so long!

I can see Apple coming out with Wii-style games (even if they start simple) and being pretty successful doing so. It would also make sense given the competition with XBox 360 and PS3 which are each trying to turn their consoles into media streamers with online rentals and such (much like Apple TV).

All I really want is more power under the hood so I can watch 1080p movies at around 8-10 kbits/sec
