I am using excel 2016 on a mac with Big Sur and have had no real problems.
Until recently when this message keeps coming up at the top of the spreadsheet.

I am sick of this now so is there any way to get rid of it and stop it from coming up each time I open excel?

It's been a while since I used MS Office - but if I remember correctly, it comes with an app called something like "AutoUpdater" or "Microsoft Updater". Check its settings, my guess it automatically runs in the background at specific intervals.

There is a Microsoft Autoupdate.MERP.params.txt file but is is blank.

Just found a mac with MS Office still installed ;-) This is what worked for me:

Go to Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support / Microsoft / MAU2.0
Inside, you'll find the application "Microsoft AutoUpdate".
Drag it out of its position (enter user password when prompted) to anywhere on your HD.

Thanks GerritV. I found the Microsoft Autoupdate file and dragged it to another folder. I then had to delete the original Microsoft Autoupdate file from Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support / Microsoft / MAU2.0Macintosh and now the nag has gone away.
Thanks again.
