Thin, clear rubberized case and a glass screen protector. You can still see the phone design, great protection from scratches and drops. If I'm at the desk at work, I'll usually take the case off, and put it back on when I'm on the go.

Naked, when I carry it in my pocket I place it in a microfiber bag, the kind that comes with sunglasses. It protects it and I can use it to wipe the fingerprints off. When I place it on the table I lay it on the bag. Looks pristine.
I have every right to bitch and complain about my own clumsiness if I break it. Who the hell do you think you are to determine what right others have or not? Some of us a fully capable of taking personal responsibility.
And the analogy doesn’t work unless you include paint and body work in your regular service and wrap your car to then remove the wrap come resale. Otherwise every car will have surface scratches and small dents and paint chips as well. It’s considered fair tear and wear. Heck even leasing companies accept that when you return a vehicle.

Been using the microfibre sunglasses pouches for a while -- with an Apple case. The microfibre pouch protects the screen from abrasions and everything from collecting lint and other stuff which might be in a pocket or bag. Yep, when the iPhone X is out somewhere with me, the pouch serves as a very convenient surface upon which to place it, even with the case! At home I don't need to bother with this, prefer to keep her naked, but when going out I really want my iPhone protected. Now that I've got Apple's Folio case for my iPhone X I don't always use the microfibre pouch, but when I put one of the regular Apple silicon cases on it, I still prefer to slip the whole works into the microfibre pouch. Indeed, my Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus looked beautiful and pristine when it was time to trade her in!
In The same respect, a phone case is not a guarantee that the phone won't break if it's dropped. It's just added insurance to help protect it and helps reduce the chances of damage depending on what type of case it is.
This is true but in my own experience with cases on all the phones I have had over the years and dropping each one of them at least 20 times over a 2 year period of each phone I am happy to say that none ended up breaking.

Somebody that depends on their phone for work would probably be better off having it protected or spend a little money to have a backup in case something happens.

I had a case and screen protector when I first got mine. My screen protector cracked and after removing it, I saw the crack actually went into the screen - you can't really see it but I know it's there. My X has fallen a few times, luckily only from either a few inches in my home (wooden floors) or in the office with carpet. My band has some nicks but I don't really care. I would much prefer to show off my $1000 phone and all it's beauty than cover it up in a case. I have AC so I'm not too worried about replacing it.

If it’s a hairline crack you might be able to get it repaired free of charge if I’m not mistaken.
For a hypothetical theory , let’s assume the customer does not have AppleCare, Why would Apple replace it free of charge when it’s damaged by the user?

I’m not sure why they would but they might. My wife didn’t have AppleCare and took her iPad in to an Apple store for a quote to get the screen replaced, she walked out with a new iPad free of charge. Something to do with the size or type of crack!
Apple has been known to make exceptions where they don’t have to. And that’s what I like about this company, is they go to lengths for customers that earn the respect and keep them loyal. Just not every Apple Store is guaranteed to provide the same experience.

If the crack is caused by stress (no obvious damage), Apple will often replace it for free.

I have had a screen protector + otterbox commuter case on my iphone X from day one. I have refused to even walk with my phone without a case on it. I am way to dropsy.
I’ve never used a case with my phones (since original iPhone) but with the X, I ended up getting one of those Peel cases. Thin enough that you barely notice it, but still provides some protection from my curious 2yr old child. And I actually like the grip the case provides.
Sure it’s been asked before but who runs a X naked? How does it hold up. I’ve always used an Apple leather case on every phone but I don’t really like the bulky feeling to the X, so would rather go caseless. Have a chance to pick one up for $700. Otherwise debating on grabbing a prepaid SE for cheap and throwing a postpaid sim in or getting an out of warranty replacement on my bent iPhone 7...

For me, the X was a bit slippery in my hands. It was the first phone that I dropped numerous times. I put a skin on the back of the phone and I'm able to handle it without having it feel like it's going to slip out of my hand.
I have the X without a case or any screen protectors. I generally take good care of my devices. I've had the X since about a month after release.
- There are a few scratches on the screen, but they are not visible once the screen is on unless I'm displaying dark content.
- There is one small scratch on the back, it almost feels like the back glass is more scratch resistant than the front, although I'm not sure that it actually is.
- The sides have some tiny scuffs but nothing that you'd notice unless you were looking for it.

I’ve used a space grey 8 Plus without a case for 10 months or so. In normal lighting conditions it still looks immaculate. Under fluorescent lighting there are noticeable hairline scratches all over the screen and front panel but - bizarrely, as another user said - the glass rear panel is immaculate. Prior to this I used a silver model without a case and it fared well also.
When I get the 2018 X, I won’t be using a case and will probably go for the silver model because I prefer the appearance over space grey. The beautiful design is a big plus of the device and it’s such a shame to hide it away in a cheap, tatty case.
