naming items on my desktop?

I'm having difficulty naming objects properly on my desktop. I've changed the text size for desktop items down to 10 - which seems to be the lowest possible setting. The problem is I can still only use 6/7 characters before the name is too big and filled with [....].
I used to be able to make folder names etc spread over two lines before the [...] started. Does anyone have any idea how I might fix that? Cheers

how easy was that! it was the grid spacings - sorry for the silly question and thanks for your help...
