logic 6

Word, Logic 6 is going to rule. I hope. Although how could it get better than 5.5, other than the inclusion of now-missing features from the OS X version? More fx would be nice, maybe even more freeby synths. But can it get any better? I know people complain about logic's interface, but I mean, come on -- those people obviously get too much fluoride in their diets. ;)

express music

I'll bet that they are going to take eMagic and make themselves an app that is similiar to what FCP Express is to FCP.

An Express recording app would rock and leave the heavy lifting and high quality to Protools.

Go Apple.

I can see apple coming out with a basic recording app, but I can't imagine that they will just dump Logic. I think Logic might get a facelift, but will be around for some time to come.

Does Apple have a booth at NAMM?

If not, wouldn't any mention of an Apple iApp have to come from the eMagic booth?

I'm dying for OS X Reaktor. I'd not expect AU yet, but I would look for Absynth on OS X and almost definitely Reaktor 4 on OS X as a free upgrade to 3.0 users. What would be great is if Reaktor could export ensembles as VST/VSTi plugins, or as standalone apps. I'd love it if 4.0 had this feature, but I doubt it.

Not sure about Absynth's AU eta, but I've seen mention on various message boards that NI is allegedly working on it. I do however think that we may be in for a pleasant surprise at the number of developers who will be announcing and/or showing AU products at NAMM. They may not be available immediately, but I suspect we'll only be talking a matter of a few weeks worst case.

Yeah, they're already on beta five. I have no inside info, and I do not know if you do, but beta 5 expires on January 30th I think, maybe the 31st, so I'd think we'll see a final version this month. Now I just need to decide if I should finally break down and buy Max/MSP or not...

I hope we see some real changes in Logic. I love everything they've done with the app over the last 18 months, but it'd be nice to see some real Apple influence regarding the interface and ease of use. I don't want to see it's power compromised for the sake of dumbing it down, by any means, but it'd be nice to see things become a little more intuitive. This would be especially nice regarding the Environment. I can't believe how many features I am still only now learning.

Such improvements would also help make up for the weak user manual. If anyone else has success with this manual, I commend you.

Logic 5 not shipping...

I've had an order for Logic Audio 5 since before Christmas that is getting more and more delayed - 'days to ship' figure getting longer, not shorter! And my local Apple reseller dissuaded me from buying Cubase in Deember as he said they would soon be doing something 'interesting' with Logic Audio come February...

there's already an "express" version of logic and protools : protools le and logic gold, and micrologic. what they might do is rename it to a apple i-app or update logic to v6 i reckon...

NAMM Rumors

I noticed that APPLE didn't revamp iTunes when it announced the iLife package. I thought they might add a basic recording function to iTunes...similar to audiocorder....However,
With the NAMM rumors, my guess is that EMAGIC will announce an entry level audio sequencing/production package, price it around $149 ( possibly $99 ) and put it on Apple store shelves.

then, just in time for summer NAMM.... Logic 6. Who knows, maybe even earlier.

Not to mention Logic "Audio", which used to be called Logic Audio Silver. I'm using version 4.8 and apart from the added automation features of Logic 5 and the free synths with Platinum, there's nothing I miss from it. Well, it would be nice to run it under OS X I suppose!

There is a manual for Logic which is written by Stephen Bennett which comes
highly recommended for understanding the Environment and so on. I bought
it before Christmas but haven't read much of it yet since most of my stuff is
just mocking up very rough demos which I'll take to my band to rewrite the
song properly.

BTW - has anyone heard about the Digi 001 and whether DigiDesign have a fix to make it work with the current Powermac MDDs? I heard that you can
get apple to swap your motherboard to one that is compatible, but it seems
like a drastic measure to me. I've just bought a dual 867 and may want to
go the protools route at some point in the future....

Not enough Pro Tools from MacWorld

While it was good to see someone from DigiDesign on the stage at MacWorld the demonstration he gave seemed to go over most of the audience's heads. This is an application from the high end of television, film and music production so I understand if most people were underwhelmed with it. Personally I think it is about time Pro Tools was updated but I do wish that some more information was available about it. The DigiDesign rep did mention that upgrades will start from $79 but for which systems? Will a ProTools X Free be released and will the M-Box, 001 & 002 get the update on the same day? Do not bother looking for answers at http://www.digidesign.com because all they have on it there is from a press release dated late-2002.

By the way, the ommission of a dedicated sound recording application in OS X should be addressed by Apple. I do not mean a cut-down Logic but something simple that lets you record at the push of a button.

Re: NAMM Rumors

You can get the Logic BigBox at musiciansfriend.com for $199 and it includes Logic Audio 5 (formerly LA Silver) as well as the ES1 synth, the EVP73 Rhodes Sim, and the EXSP24 sample player.

My point? $99 is TOO much for the "entry level" recording soft. Logic Audio (silver) is by no means entry level. it still offers 24/96 recording, audio instruments, and many of the features found in LA platinum. It is not iMove to LAP's Final Cut Pro.

If apple releases an iApp, it'll be free and will be comparable to ProTools Free (8 audio tracks, 64 MIDI tracks). They cant charge for it if Digi gives away PT Free.

Well quite. But I'm sort of familiar with Cubase and the reviews of Logic (which though very praising warned of its complexity) put me off a bit.

I'm waiting for Metasynth, Xx and MetaTrack from UI software to be released on OS X. I find them amazing tools for creativity. Highly recommended if a bit 'left field' ;)

apple has no booth at NAMM this year, EMAGIC does, in Hall A...at least that's what they're giving all the particapents in our little book about what's going on and the floor plan...

i would much rather have them release something that gives true 5.1 surround sound for the mac...i know there's ways now, but i want either a card in my tower or something i can hookup to USB and it works perfectly...

so, i guess i'll find out when i go...no apple booth is kinda a bummer though...

Re: Re: Re: Logic 5 not shipping...

A common misconception. Logic is a good deal more complex than Cubase, but this is a distinct advantage. The Environment allows virtually limitless cutomization, although you can begin a simple project just as easily with Logic as in Cubase.

Cubase is just too cutesy for me. It never seems like a serious piece of kit. Plus it suffers from one fatal flaw (in my eyes): plugins are assigned CPU cycles regardless of whether or not audio is passing through them. This has NOT changed in CubaseSX. This means that you will get much better CPU mileage in Logic (which assigns CPU cycles to plugs only when they are actually in use).

Go down to the local music store and testdrive logic for an afternoon. It wont take you long to appreciate its virtues.
