Router/Server combo? Not a bad idea.

On that topic, I have 2 Synology servers - one for media and the other for media and "Time Machine" usage. They're ~2 years old, each running CAT6's to Mac Mini HTPC's, often use Quickconnect for external access.

Processor's are slow, I'm considering the DS415+ (the "play" models are less powerful and don't transcode well). Aside from Synology, any advice? Before I throw down ~$500, making sure it's the right one.

Have you looked into XPEnology? Same Synology software you know with the freedom to run whatever hardware you want (I know Apple people aren't real big on choice in hardware, but...)

Never heard of it, thanks. Checked it out just now. Is it basically modified versions of DSM running on any server (custom, Synology, etc)?

Yup. Go ahead and make a Core i5 Synology with eight hard drive bays if you want.

Niiiiiice. Been reading up on it, have a lot of experience with Hackint0shes so it seems very straight forward. Gigabyte boards are always the best, esp. now as they have Thunderbolt 2.0. Thanks mate!
