Apple's iPhone became qualified for extended use in space back in February, and during the Artemis II mission to the Moon in April, NASA astronauts shared several photos taken with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman recently followed up with a shot on iPhone video of an "Earthset," or the moment that the Earth disappears behind the Moon. The video was captured from the docking hatch window on the Orion capsule, and it is the first Earthset shot on a mobile device.

It takes a second for the iPhone to focus as Wiseman switches to 8x zoom mode on his iPhone 17 Pro Max, but the rest of the 53-second video features a clear look at the craters on the Moon as the Earth slips out of sight.

Wiseman said that at 8x zoom, the view was "quite comparable to the view of the human eye."

We’ll probably find in two missions time, when they land on the moon. Apple would pay a small fortune to have an astronaut casually take a photo.

Knowing the way of the world we’ll also see Bezos personally deliver an Amazon Prime package…

Are you suggesting that Apple paid NASA to choose iPhones for the Artemis II mission?

I choose to believe that iPhones were tested and found to be the better choice compared to Google Pixels and Samsung Galaxy devices.

It is so weird. Space traveling is so expensive yet the gear they take with them is the same most us use scrolling tiktok while sitting on the toilet and dispose on a yearly basis, because the camera isn’t good enough.

The expensive part is the gear keeping them alive in the very hostile environment… while also getting it to space.

Using default iPhone camera app with focusing issues instead of Final Cut Camera or Blackmagic cam. 🤔📱🌘🌎

So can the iPhone 17PM work in the dead of space?

well it was inside the pressurized environment of the Orion capsule. however i have read that the oscillators in iphones are mems-based (instead of crystals) and so actually do need atmospheric pressure to operate. so i think if you tried to take the iphone on an EVA, it would fail.

Same reason they’re used for corporate and government. Highly standardized, strong supply chain security, enterprise level support, high quality parts etc.

They also apparently disassembled and cleaned and inspected these specific units.
