Well, Saving it would be cool, IF not, Put it in a space exhibit or something, destroying it would be like losing a piece of history

I agree, I would love seeing Hubble being brought to the Dulles Air and Space Museum, rather than sent to a fiery death.....

My understanding of the situation was that-

2. The current time is about telescopes that can be build for a fraction of the cost, here on earth, have a better view (and not just visual*) of the sky, as well as having a far cheaper repair rate.

Im sorry but you really are way off on this one...
Earth bound telescopes.. are nowhere near as sophisticated... and cannot even remotely compete with what Hubble could/can do

That said, it would be better in the long run to just build a new Hubble, that would be more powerful and better suited for the task, and would be cheaper.

Now I have to agree with that... It would seem to me that for the 1 to 1.6 billion for a repair mission it should be able to be replaced...
I mean come on people 1.6 billion is a fortune.... and we should demand more value for our government dollar than what we are getting

You must have misunderstood me.. at least I think. My point was that while orbiting telescopes have the potential to be better telescopes because they don't have to deal with seeing through at atmosphere, the Hubble telescope *ISN'T* a better telescope. Currently the most powerful and far seeing telescopes are right here on earth, and cost a fraction of the Hubbles repair price, not to mention it's lunch and upkeep

I'm fully aware it would be better to stick all our telescopes in space. I'm just not sure that it's the best bang for the buck. At least not by the figures I'm seen...
