Native Remember the Milk (the killer to-do app)

This is a really nice app. I don't know yet if it's worth the 25$ a year for me but it's great that I can't try it for 15 days. It looks really promising.

It really just depends on what your needs for a task management app are. For a while I was using Things with the iphone and three macs and it wasn't cutting it since Things isn't designed to be used with multiple computers. I had it setup with DropBox and if I accidentally left two instances of the application running one would easily overwrite the others newly added data. As much as I love Things, this was kind of a useless solution.

I recently switched to Remember The Milk. While the interface is an internet application, it allows more ways to get tasks into its system than any other system.

I can email, IM, Twitter, text message or even call in tasks using Jott (I haven't tried this yet). If I'm offline I can access my tasks using Google Gears. Currently I'm using a program called Fluid which converts any website into a .app so I can use Remember the Milk on its own with Spaces and Expose.

I'd use Things if it could sync with a service like Remember the Milk, but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. Remember the Milk is software as a service and I think for $25/yr the ability to access and update my tasks from anywhere on almost any platform is well worth it.

Jott used to be great as you could make use of a lot of the services it provided for free but recently they moved everything thing to a paid for subscription, I think something like a $15/month subscription. Now I'm all for paying for services (have both a RTM and Toodledo Pro subscription) but Jott's subscription is just too pricey.

Brilliant. Superb. Outstanding.

This is quite simply, without a shadow of a doubt, no questions asked, THE best task management app in the AppStore, or at least that I've tried (including Appigo Todo, Things, SmartTime etc). Nothing else comes close.

I'd like to chime in here. What's brilliant about an app that just lists your to-do's but doesn't actually organize them for you? What's superb about a task manager that doesn't even have a Calendar? What's outstanding about a productivity application that segregates tasks from events, as if they were not related? I've looked at all the apps out there and SmartTime is the only one that does all that. Objectively speaking, there's no comparison. Subjectively speaking, yeah, everyone likes something differently.

In any case, explain to me why one needs to have a calendar when it comes to tasks? Most of my tasks don't have specific end times, but end dates, i.e. due dates. Also, my tasks need to be organized by PRIORITY and not by where they fall in a calenar. Also, believe it or not, most tasks are separate from events, if I want an event, i create an event, if i want a task, i create a task. Finally, what's most important to me is ALERTS. What good is any calendar or task app if there is no way for the app to alert you as to upcoming events or tasks. Doesn't look like smarttime does that. RTM does do alerts, and to me that's the brilliant aspect of RTM considering no other tasks app offers that.

Personally I want my calendar separate from my task manager, my calendar is where I need to be and my task manager is what I need to do, they don't necessarily relate either so I'd rather not have an app try to mix and match for me.

One of the best things for me is getting an email first thing in the morning (or whenever I choose) with a list of todays tasks.

I know other places may do this too (I think Toodledo may do it)

Yes, you're correct. I believe that Toodledo does send an email summary of tasks for the day, however I don't believe they will send an alert x hours prior to the due "time" of a task if you have end times set for a task. This is where RTM sets itself apart from other apps. Most of my tasks don't have due times, but simply dates, however for the ones with due times, they are usually high enough priority for me where it has to be completed by a specific time and to be alerted x hours prior is just.......a necessity
