Yes, it's in the official App Store.

There's the AppShopper link. I can't get the iTunes link since they block it at work.

Thanks for the tip. Didn't realize AroundMe had that.

No problem. I just thought I'd mention it since it functions largely similar to the paid Cydia app discussed here. There are are ads (it is free after all), but they haven't bothered me.

If you have a 3GS or 4, if you have a search with a lot of results you can tip the phone horizontally to enable an augmented reality view that overlays the direction of the places in your results over the camera video. Fun, but largely useless unless you're in a downtown setting.

AroundMe looks useful, thanks for the tip!

What drives me nuts about apps like these is that they often don't list functionality with other apps--in this case, Navigon. I'm not even seeing a generic "sends directions to your navigation software" or anything else in the description that would've told me, hey, this is useful when paired with Navigon! (Same issue BTW with the Yellow Pages app--the US only version--which is also integrated with Navigon and can be damn useful when used that way.) I wish devs would learn to add some of these details to their descriptions instead of relying on word of mouth to spread the news on this sort of thing.

Thanks for aroundme!

Just saved 2 bucks :)

Tested it with "statue of liberty," which it found in seconds, then clicked show route. 5 seconds later navigon is taking me to new york :)

This is how it should have been all along. It was dumb to have a smartphone and end up having to write down addresses to look them up in navigon.

I am very pleased :)

Yeah, I typed in San Diego Zoo in the Around Me app and had Navigon route me there.

I've always had this app on my phone but never knew about this feature! Learn something new everyday..

Ditto. I never knew AroundMe could do this either. Great info!

I've been using the TomTom app for a while now and have been using the Google Local search function in much the same manner I used to search for locations when I navigated with the google search in the maps app. For example if I'm in chicago and I want to find a place but don't know the address I just type it into the google local search function in TomTom and then navigate to the search result.

Are either of these two apps somehow better? I'm honestly wondering because the TomTom implementation of google local search already works pretty wonderfully for me.

Yeah, doesn't tomtom already do this?

I don't have TomTom, but at least in Navigon Google Local Search seems to be limited to your current location. So to use an example from earlier, if you're in Florida and use the Local Search to try to find the Statue of Liberty, it'll come up empty. On top of that, the results seem to be inferior to those returned by the Maps app or a simple Google search even for nearby things.

Maybe it's better in TomTom, but Local Search is abysmal in Navigon. An example I just ran for "Best Buy" in Google maps showed all 7 area locations, but I only got 2 using Local Search. Garbage.

CoPilot

In case anyone else is interested, I emailed the dev asking him if he planned to add support for CoPilot. He did some investigating and determined that CoPilot doesn't support this functionality. He suggested I contact CoPilot and request it (HERE is how Navigon describes this feature).

FWIW, I was really impressed with how quickly he responded and his desire to accomodate my request.

ditto on aroundme.....I've had 'aroundme' for a couple yrs on both phones and i never knew about the search function and that is would pull up map app to map things.....

thanks for the awesome tip on aroundme!

I have 2 Navigon Maps, US & Mexico. Why does Aroundme launch the Mexico one and not my US one???

I'm sure it just uses the API provided by Navigon, which means it operates similarly to a web address, attempting to visit something like navigon://address

I'd guess that iOS uses whichever app claims the prefix last. Did you install Mexico after US? My guess would be it would use whichever one was installed last. Might be a limitation of Navigon itself.

if around me isn't working great the author updated the tweak in cydia and it now works with navigon.

Thanks for the tip on 'aroundme'.

Wished I had it last week. Was so frustrated entering the address in Navigon, switching back and forth between apps.

What's special about aroundme instead of the stock maps app. From the maps app I just insert an address or search for something and then in two clicks away from getting it into TomTom. Navigate from maps is the best discovery in my opinion lol. Works so well.

Well, the first reason would be that the stock Maps app doesn't integrate with Navigon/TomTom. You have to purchase Navigate from Maps in order to do so.

AroundMe is free, and in addition sorts destinations into categories, which the Maps app (stock or otherwise) can't do.

I can see people preferring one or the other, but since they both provide similar functionality and one is $2 and one is free (and provides additional features over the $2 version), it's pretty obvious which one most people are going to choose.

I like having both. I use around me for quick searches. The navigate from maps is great if your using another app to find something because usually it will direct you to use maps and from their you can go straight to navigon/tom-tom. For example if your looking at restaurant review using yelp and you find a place to eat it will direct you to maps and from their you can go to navigon/tom-tom.
