I'm a newbie to the Iphone market, what is the advantage to paying for an app like Navigon or TomTom over the "Maps" app that comes preloaded on the 4S?

I, like others before am interested in something that can give me up to date maps and directions and if it can find some POI as I need them it would be a nice benefit. Since I have a limited data plan I would also have to have an app that isn't constantly going through data during my trip.

Seems like that leaves me with TomTom or Navigon, any other recomendations?

Thank you all.

Both Navigon and TomTom have on device maps so data isn't so much of a worry - you won't be downloading your maps on the fly.

With Navigon v2 you can install only the maps that you want ( i.e., North America - choose your provinces / states that you want installing ), to save storage space.

Today Navigon released an update, they will give you free map updates on an irregular basis as v1, or, you can pay $19ish which will get you quarterly map updates for at least 2 years.

At the moment there is a sale for Navigon - reduced by around $20.

Never used TomTom.

I suggest you use the Search function to find the many threads that have already been created on this very topic to find a lot of feedback from both and other navigation options :)
