Practical? My Navigon has worked flawlessly without the need of an additional GPS chip AFTER I mounted it near the top of my dashboard. It didn't work too well when sitting in a cup holder in the center console though.

Same here. I am using it with the Griffin WindowSeat and it has been absolutely perfect! The built in GPS for the TomTom Kit is in my opinion only useful for the iPhone 2G and the iPod Touch. The 3GS has perfect GPS signal/strength for me:)

Despite Tomtom being my favorite GPS device maker, I have to say, Navigon is completely and utterly kicking Tomtom's ass when it comes to developing for the iPhone.

Orly? Put a plug at the bottom of this mount and it fits my phone with a case on it, and just about any case for that matter. It works great.

I have the same holder from the Apple Store. It works great!

The Navigon holder is much shorter and farther away from your face. This, coupled with Navigon's horrible, small font, means that you won't be reading street names anytime soon.

So glad I bought iGO My Way!!! What a great app!

I have this mount and like it very much. I use it with the LiquidAUX and it is a great combo. While I'm glad Navigon is coming out with a mount it will have to have a GPS chip for me to consider changing.

Ive had two of these for about four months and they're great.
Use copilot and great great signal all of the time. Would not need anything to boost gps signal

GPS Mount

I purchased the Navigon software on the 31st. I used it on the first in my car, used a generic cell phone holder ($25 I think) from Best Buy (so I could keep it in the case.) Worked great around Portland, OR. (94 Honda Civic)

I go to do some training on Columbus, OH. I am renting a PT Cruiser, and the iPhone app looses GPS coverage all the time. (Weird thing is that it is better at night than during midday.) I am using the same mount, both attached to the windshield below the rear view mirror.

I am at a loss as to why. It might be something in the glass that is lowering the reception, or maybe something about the design of the car? It is very weird issue. Right now I am telling people I know to hold off on the iPhone app until I can investigate more and travel to more places around the country in other rental cars.

You'll find that the loss of signal will be due to the windscreen. Most modern windscreens have various layers of laminate and other substances in them. Some of them unfortunately have the effect of blocking GPS signal. That is why you don't find it in your older car, because it's got a much older screen (unless it's been replaced in the cars lifetime).

Not a lot you can do about it really.

*edit* in one of my previous cars I used to have to hold my GPS unit out the drivers window initially just so it could pick up enough satellites quickly, otherwise it would take ages to get enough signal through the screen.

ugh... not interested without the GPS built in - my current window mount and power lead will do just fine.

I agree that in general the gps works fine, but sometimes in more built up areas it could do with a helping hand and occasionally it'll place me on a parallel road and annoying little things like that while driving around - again an issue that would be improved with a better GPS chip.

Looks like I might be waiting on the tom tom dock if it does indeed work with navigon in the end

Navigon already lost from design. It can't hold iphones with cases like the Tomtom.

$57 seems a little steep for just a window mount.

I paid $20 for my Kensington mount and still feel I overpaid.

I guess with the possibility of connecting an iPhone to a mount with a GPS inside, there is now the possibility of just an app that will allow me to connect to my serial GPS which I've had for some time and works perfectly?
Or, heaven forbid...Buetooth like I used to use on my WinMo phone?
I already have a great GPS receiver and a dashboard mount. I just need the app to allow me to connect it and use it.
Does anybody know of a developer working on that solution?

I'm pretty happy with their software, but this mount doesn't really inspire me.

I want something with a dock mount in so I can just put the phone in and have it charge. I'm over the whole loose wires and need to plug in the all the time.

Still leaning towards the Tom Tom mount if it ever comes out.

 The TomTom mount can't handle cases either.

This is very nice looking, and I may just get it. Right now I have the Griffin WindowSeat, which is great until I try to rotate it and it pops out of the mount. That's annoying, so if I can't find a solution, I'll consider Navigon's version.

to me it looks like the tom tom could accommodate low profile cases like the one i'm using now which effectively leaves the very top and bottom of the iphone clear.

Eh....

I'm kind of mad at Navigon right now... I was one of the "early adopters" of their first stand-alone navigation system they sold in the United States. I paid full retail price for it, in fact - and *still* thought it was worth the money. It was one of the first in its price range to offer real-time traffic capabilities (with a one-time purchase of an unlock code to activate it, vs. a subscription like other companies were doing). It was first with the feature of showing real views of most complex entrance/exit ramps on highways when you approached them (drawing arrows in the lanes you need to stay in). And as importantly as anything, Navigon was first to offer all their units with an available map update subscription that gave you 3 years of quarterly updates for a flat fee of under $100. (Absolute value compared to paying $149 or so for ONE map update like I had to do with a Garmin I owned before it!)

All of this caused me to buy a second Navigon unit for my other vehicle, not too long ago. But all of a sudden, they announced they were pulling out of the US market. The map update subscriptions have all been yanked from the market without warning, and people who recently bought a "3 year" subscription found it was being shortened to 2 years (because Navigon decided they were ending map support for the USA for the stand-alone units in 2011).

They seem to think releasing this iPhone version of one of their units with US maps is sufficient "support" for their customers in the USA? I, for one, am NOT impressed. I'm not able to get my map update package at all for this 2nd. GPS unit I bought, so it will quickly get outdated. I don't WANT the iPhone version of something I already own 2 of in stand-alone form. I want the ongoing support I was promised for the units I have.....

I'm really liking Navigon now, more than TomTom. I think I'll get it, after all.
