I went to the app store today in iTunes and noticed that the Navigon North America app has it's sale price extended until August 31st.

I wonder if any firm Tom-Tom info will be out by then?!?!

Wow nice. Although I think they should just set the permanent price at $70 and free map updates through 2010 at least. At that price, they will own the market since iGo MyWay is $10 more and the other competitors are sure to be less full featured or cost more.

The main downsides I have seen about Navigon's app are that the Maps are old, no TTS, a bad POI database, and text that is difficult to read on daytime maps.

Still, every other app out there has similar problems and these can all be fixed with updates...

Tom-Tom already dropped the ball and its rolling down the street. Navigon is 100% accurate without a gimmick GPS holder.

Very cool on the extension of the sale. Pricing can be changed so quickly on the App Store (a few hours it seems), I bet they keep a close eye on the competition and adjust accordingly.

Question on the 'outdated' maps. Navigon owns Navteq (or so I've read). So, why wouldn't the maps be current? And, how do we know what version or date of maps they are using? I've searched for addresses in Navigon and they don't seem to exist. BUT, when the address is actually contained within a contact, that I then use to navigate to, everything is perfect with finding the address. Some of these were in very recent built out neighborhoods.

Nokia owns Navteq. TomTom owns Tele Altas.

TomTom... They already missed out on a huge market. They've missed all of the summer travelers taking driving trips. Back to school is coming.

I bet the sale is still on because the update for the US market isn't quite ready yet. I think that the update and the price increase will go hand in hand.

I've been testing this app pretty much every time I get in the car and have zero problems with it. It's accurate and easy to use.

Does it do text to speech in a decent (even if machine generated) voice?

This should be a sticky somewhere:

Voice navigation: "Turn left in 100 yards"
Text-to-Speech: "Turn left on Baker Street in 100 yards"

Navigon and iGo My Way both do Voice Navigation, but not text-to-speech, which is synthesizing road names into speech. iGo has said it's 'in the pipeline,' while Navigon hasn't said.

I find the maps to be very current. I live in a one year old development and each of the streets is current and up to date. I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

that's good news! i've been wishy washy on whether or not to purchase it.... we already have navigation in our prius (although after using honda and acura's navi for several years... the toyota version is sub-par  plus our maps our two years old now AND if there's any new stores, restaurants, etc... they won't be on the car navi)

plus when hubby travels for work, it would be nice for him to have the gps in his phone to use???? but then again... if it's to find places to eat... we already have and use apps for that... decisions decsions???

I JUST picked up Navigon yesterday, while it still said the 15th. I was holding out to see if TomTom was being released, and didn't want to miss the sale. My ONLY disappointment is the lack or Text-To-Speech, and with that coming this summer, there will be no need for me to get TomTom, and they really missed out on an opportunity here. They should have at the very least, released their software, even if the mount wasn't ready.

I tried this last night, and Navigon is really good guys. And for that sale price, It's a steal. TomTom is going to have to be leaps and bounds better then Navigon to get my money, and I don't know if that's possible.

For Navigon North America, update not yet out. Version available is still 1.0.

Good to know about the TTS info.

I didn't realize that Navigon didn't own it anymore. That was sure a short ownership period. Navigon bought in 2006. Nokia in 2007.

Yeah, the transition was confusing. There is still information out on the net in blogs and GPS industry sites about Navigon buying Navteq, and the press releases on Navigon's site are gone. Only if you search for Nokia & Navteq does the info show up relatively easy.
