    Dear MacRumours users,

I love my Navigon software, both when using it in the car, when biking and taking long walks (with the need of nav help).

I do, however, not need the screen when biking, as I put the iPhone in my backpack and rely on the voice navigation.

Unfortunately, I have been forced to leave the screen on when putting the iPhone in my backpack, as the navigation stops when turning of the screen. This is a complete waste of battery and screen-life.

Does anyone know of a trick to prevent this?

    Thank you!

    Screen Life

I don't know a Navigon-specific trick, but if you turn the screen brightness all the way down in the iPhone settings, you should be able to extend the battery life by a great deal.

Isn't there an old (or sorta new) saying that "if you can't see it then it's not running". However I have an App called iTrail that I use to track my runs. The screen stays on but on long runs it will cut the screen off to save power. When I hit the Home button it comes back on and iTrail is still running and recording my GPS data. Not sure how it's done but there must be some way that an App can cut the screen off and still run (as long as you don't try to run another).

Maybe you could put this in as a request for the next update.

Thank you, thats what I am doing at the moment... not elegant,... but saves a lot of power

Yeah, I have both iTrail and MotionXGPS... both of them are recording GPS data while screen is off...
I think Navigon actually designed the app to go inactive when screen is off.
I put in a suggestion to get this changed, but never heard from them.

I hope they will fix/change it as they have an option for bicycle when navigating.

This is an old thread, but I had the same question as the OP. Has anyone figured out how to turn off the screen and still get driving instructions from Navigon. If I exit the app, the instructions stop and I couldn't find an option in settings for this. Thanks?

Found this thread via Google and I am having the exact same problem....Navigon turns itself off (power saving mode appearently) when my iphone screen goes off and stops all navigation....Very annoying and no way to disable it in the app settings

I also found this thread via google a few days ago without finding the answer on the web, but I figured it out today. You have to go to
Settings > General > Background App refresh and enable it.
