What's up with the whole requiring a cable subscription to view it on an app?

Either make it available for everyone or quit wasting everyone's time.

I'm not sure where they get off with this restriction anyway, considering it's network television content. I could see if it was HBO or Showtime but NBC and TBS? Please.

If only the Apple TV were a "true" iOS device. :( I can't see watching a show on my tiny iPhone screen, but I can certainly see it on a 40" TV with an Apple TV connected to it.

Just wanted to point out that mirroring does not necessarily produce letterboxed viewing. If video out is enabled (for when you use the HDMI adaptor) and the output is in widescreen format there, then the wireless mirroring will be in widescreen format and fill the screen as well.

I can't find that setting in IOS 5

Did not have a problem downloading, which app where you trying to download?

See my edit.

NBC shows available in Canada

At least it was a few days ago when trying it out.

I don't know for how long, but certainly The Office episodes were available.

The American companies block their signals via internet (Hulu, CBS.com to name a few) to Canada sighting they don't have copyright with the distribution companies to do this. Then I have to go to piratebay or eztv to get what others can get legally in the US. Want to stop piracy, give us the ability to do what our American brethren can do legally.

BBC and ITV from the UK block content to non-UK residents as well, so what's the problem?

This is a step in the wrong direction. I do not want my TV shows balkanized into separate apps, each with their own interface. I do not want separate NBC, TNT, and Turner apps, anymore than I want separate Warner and Universal apps for watching movies, or separate Random House and Simon and Schuster apps for reading books. TV content (both free and paid) should be centralized in the iTunes Store, or at least a Hulu-like TV app. Obviously, this is what consumers want, but not the networks. They can insert all the ads, watermarks, or network promos they want into free content, but please no separate apps to clutter up the home screen and make it difficult to search/browse all available content.

????
Have you heard of Folders....its not rocket science. Title it "TV Apps" done.

Really? And here I thought this was just something Canada wouldn't have had access to anyway.

Your mindset is that of someone who sees rich people driving fancy cars and thinks he needs to steal one because it wasn't fairly available to him as a middle-class individual. That's ridiculous. If you got by before without NBC on your iPhone, why get so annoyed when others get it? If NBC or your content providers wanted you to have it, they would have worked that out. Instead, you'll keep getting what you're paying for. It's not like they're about to start surgcharges for this stuff that you'll pay for and still not have access to the content.

First off let me say I do not pirate my Music, TV, Movies and software.

Second, Let me elaborate on my comment.

I am not saying people are justified in pirating because NBC makes it harder to watch their content the way people actually want to watch it. I am saying that the average user (especially those in Canada who mostly live within 100KM of the US border) are denied the same access as our American friends may be a part of the reason users turn to Piracy. I am not condoning piracy or suggesting that people should turn to copyright infringement.

Because the cable providers would go ballistic...It would be cool if they made ATV Apps and then I could subscribe to HBO and TBS directly. Maybe one day.

NBC Does not require a cable log-in.

This is cool. The more networks the better.

Now if only Comcast would allow NBC to stream live football.

If you have a Verizon iPhone, you can download the NFL Mobile app. The Sunday night game was on it last night, no charge (All the games would be available if I paid the NFL subscription)

Not the same. Those non NBC apps require cable subscription.

Haven't tried it, but assuming they act like the others (Watch ESPN, CNN) - none of which DirecTV is a provider that allow it.

HA! Exactly. Like channels!

This kind of stuff is why AppleTV needs an App Store. As much as people like watching stuff on their iPad, they overwhelmingly prefer the watching on the largest screen in their house.

The cable companies have control on this for the moment. Their contracts are why nothing else can provide display on a tv. Google found this out with their tv game. Places like hulu had to block access via Google TVs or be in breach of their contracts.

This is similar to why no Canada etc on many of these apps. Local stations often have the broadcast rights to shows for their area and TNT or whomever making viewing available through their app is a contract breach because they only have US broadcast rights. Believe me, I feel ya. Time warner took over cable where I live from Comcast and TWC never allows access to these kinds of apps. Making me just as screwed over as you are.

Elitist? I'd sooner call my attitude fortunate. I happen to live in the US, so I happen to benefit from this. I don't think I'm better than you for having access, I just think I live somewhere else.

It's great that you get NBC at home. I just don't understand why that entitles you to this new feature that you're not paying extra for. We happen to get it, you happen to not. What's the travesty?

Must admit: I'm not getting your argument. The original poster stated that the thought the distribution companies need to step up their game. It was an admonition to them to provide the same kind of services provided to those in the U.S. It's not a bad thing to ask for, is it? We're supposed to be in a global economy and in particular, there are free trade agreements flapping around in the wind everywhere (most notably between the U.S. and Canada). We seem to have a hard time benefitting though.

Other than that, I'm sort of with you. At the end of the day we can put up or shut up, I guess. It's no big deal. Personally, even if I was able to get these channels on my iPad, I wouldn't watch anyway. It would cut too much into my Twitter and FB time.

I can view clips on the TNT-app over here in Holland on my iPad.
But no full episodes.

I wonder if I could watch them, using a login from someone in the US. Hmmm

("Hey brother, can you spare me a login?")

sry i meant NBC, TNT doesnt work

It likely makes it easier for them to get viewing stats. And if they would actually credit shows with those viewers for budget make good alongside the OTA ratings (same with iTunes, DVD sales etc) then you might want it this way. Because it could mean fewer good shows being canned for cheap reality nonsense and dumb game shows

So tired of these types of posts. Of course it's USA only, they are US-based companies with broadcast rights in the US.

We happen to get it, you happen to not. What's the travesty?

OK, fair enough. So let's have a [US Only] or [UK Only] tag so we can easily determine who gets what. Once again: MacRumors front page stories have a worldwide reach.

I'm not complaining about the lack of distribution rights to Canada (well, OK, I am, but my complaints are directed toward the CRTC, not you guys). Consider my "US only" post an expression of disappointment in our laws. We don't get Hulu, Spotify, TV show rentals, Apple TV downloading of previously purchased content, iCloud music streaming, most of Netflix, most streaming channels... the list goes on and on.

Lucky Americans. These apps are cool.
